Dave 1 Report post Posted November 15, 2004 Every now and then a researcher pops up claiming he's found Atlantis. Any of these hundrets of claims of that exact sort has been proven to be false. Therefore, I wouldn't put any trust in this story. There is already one obvious dent in his story: He sais that Atlantis was found one mile beneath sea level. If you bear in mind that the deepest "valley" in any ocean on earth is maybe 7 miles deep, you immediately realize that the sea level cannot have gone up by 1 entire mile over the course of only 11,500 years, which is an incredibly short timespan. A rise (of the sea level) of 1/10 mile over 11,500 years would already be highly unlikely.
Speed Demon 0 Report post Posted November 15, 2004 Unlikely? Yes. However, to cover a city under water it would take very violent waters and these violent waters could easily be capable of moving massive amounts of dirt and stuff to cover the city. This is just a ponder, I am no scientist, but I thought the article was an interesting find :D

I think the traditional description of the disappearance of Atlantis was that it "sank" not that it was covered by rising waters.....
Dave 1 Report post Posted November 15, 2004 I am not familar with the "history" of Atlantis (if ever there is one), but if it literally "sank" by one mile it is highly unlikely (IMHO) that the walls and streets and whatnot remained intact. In my understanding if a piece of land sinks by a mile the whole terrain will crumble and turn to mush. I do not think you can find intact walls and a structure of a city after it "sank". In my understanding if a piece of land sinks by a mile the whole terrain will crumble and turn to mush. I do not think you can find intact walls and a structure of a city after it "sank". I speak of the classic myth similar to the one about the lost continent of Mu...the whole "continent" was held to have sunk beneath the ocean...not just a city. there was refrerence to flooding in Plato's chronicles, but as a result of the island state "sinking" due to earthquakes. For a long time the continent/island of Atlantis was believed to be out in the "Atlantic" Ocean.
mseguin 0 Report post Posted November 15, 2004 Well to anyone who saw water rising that much, it would look like the city was "sinking."
tyler9 0 Report post Posted November 16, 2004 There have been massive floods over the years. They said that a large chunk of land was swept by floods and this is when 'Noah' built his ark and sailed it in the middle east. They found beachlines or somethin of that sort about three miles underwater.
crosskore 0 Report post Posted November 16, 2004 Can someone explain to me how this whole Atlantis thing started? Did someone just read a bible or something and it talked about a city that sank and now everyone thinks its real and is looking for it?
MDE3 0 Report post Posted November 16, 2004 Plato referred to it in quite a bit of detail in his writings.....quite a bit "BC"....so scholars and historians have been aware of it for a few thousand years.
dix0r 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2004 from the article: "Robert Sarmast says a Mediterranean basin was flooded in a deluge around 9,000 BC"9,000 BC = 11,000 before present = i think the last ice age supposedly ended 10-12,000 years ago...no idea how much of a change in sea level that could bring about but its interesting ;]

asdfa 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2004 do you guys think we'll discover a civilization that exists under the sea? maybe with aquaman as their leader?
Speed Demon 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2004 No, I don't think we will discover aquaman, lol. However, with new and increasing technology, I think we will definitely uncover some very interesting artifacts that lay at the bottom of our oceans.

dix0r 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2004 They just recently found some remains which they believe were the first ancestors of the Homo Sapiens............. I know, kind've off topic. yeah, they're like pygmies from somewhere in indonesia i believe...we talked about it in my anthro/archaeology class...the ones they found were pretty old (9,000 years maybe?) but i guess they lived there at the same time as homosapiens. there were rumours among the local people that they died out only around 500 years ago. if so, that'd be pretty crazy... MDE3 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2004 In terms of a parellel hominid species (as opposed to "hominoid") 9000 years is very recent...australopithicus africanus and other similar "hominoids"(similar in terms of stature and cranium cc's) were from 1 -3 million years ago. So the fact that these critters were so recent, is blowing a lot of academic minds and theories....like always happens with new discoveries. There will be inumerable challenges as to the veracity of the claims...it's "publish or perish" in that field....like so many other "scientific" fields. If you want some really interesting theories on the history of the world..try reading "Worlds in Collision" by Dr. Immanuel Velikovsky...as well as some of his other works like "Aeons in Chaos"..really interesting stuff which tries to tie myths to the cataclysmic events of our solar system....also germain to Atlantis as well in some ways. When I worked in this field "aeons ago"...Velikovsky's theories were considered somewhat "heretical" however in more recent times, he has been given a harder look, and the coincidences he points to and the serendipity of events he coordinates make really fascinating reading..
