Elbow pads

What are the advantages/disadvantages of 3 piece elbow pads vs 2 piece? Seems like there are fewer 3 piece elbow pads available. Is it because 2 piece are less bulky and lighter? Just curious because I've always used 3 piece elbows (personal preference).

Three piece is usually more flexible and break in more quickly, but take longer to manufacture and are therefore usually more expensive for the same amount of protection.
