Jason Harris 31 Report post Posted August 24, 2011 I couldn't find a general thread to ask referees how they would call particular plays, so I thought I'd create a catchall topic that people can add their questions to over time.My play occurred during a drop-in today. Derek Armstrong was playing and had the puck in the defensive zone. I forechecked him and, as he moved laterally in front of his goalie, I put my stick in front of him trying to reach for the puck. I skated with him, although he is obviously faster, so maybe the back of my arm was making contact with his arm, and possibly his legs kicked into my stick, but I had only my top hand on the stick and was trying only to reach and poke the puck. Suddenly, he cut up the ice toward the other end, then grabbed my stick and threw it. Obviously, his action would be a penalty, but he then yelled at me that I had been hooking him. He said my stick came horizontally off the ice, which I didn't feel was true, but in thinking back it's possible (slightly) that it might have crept up his legs as he picked up more speed, causing my arm to ride higher, although the truth is I don't think I ever made substantial contact, and I certainly never "hooked" or "tugged." You also have to understand that, after traveling in NZ with Army for 17 days, there's no other way to say this than he's a different cat. You don't have conversations with him as much as you have him talking and then him getting miffed if you don't agree with what he said, so we couldn't even have a friendly discussion of why I felt I hadn't hooked him.I literally don't think I've ever been called for a hook in my life, and I don't recall too often a player being called for hooking when he's trying to match the speed of the carrier while he's attempting to reach for the puck, but I'm curious of referees' perspectives.
