kirkomlett1 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2011 Just wondering if anyone on here plays/ has played College or Junior hockey and what kind of workouts you do during the season/ off season.
Krev 86 Report post Posted October 9, 2011 Played Juniors. Interval training was my preferred training method after taking a month or so off after the season ended.
bigdmac 12 Report post Posted October 9, 2011 I played both junior and college. I was into other sports during the off season though, I played for Ontario Rugby and played on the Canadian Volleyball Team. I always thought that other sports were the best training for me becuase I always had a hard time finding the motivation to just get up and go do interval training or lift weights. If you're like me, maybe find another sport or something along those lines to keep you fit. I would be playing other sports as well during the actual hockey season to keep me busy on my off days. sickwilly 37 Report post Posted October 9, 2011 Juniors and college. Our team gave us an off-season workout program to follow. It was mostly running with some interval training mixed in.
SEagle30 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2011 I played juniors and am currently playing college. Biggest thing I can tell ya to do is lots of cardio. Do interval training on the bike or running. It'll help ya the most and get you ready for those bag skates the coaches love to give us when they get mad at us for something stupid. haha
Harv 86 Report post Posted October 10, 2011 Played juniors and currently play college. Coaches told us ''it's your responsibility to keep yourself in shape during the summer''. In the summer I would run after work for 2 miles then do an 80 set of stairs as fast as I could to work on foot speed. I'd skate twice a week (wouldn't run during those days). No pickup unless it was a Jr/College skate. Open pickup creates bad habits. Take Sunday completely off to recover. Never touched any heavy weight. (I'm a goalie)During the season it's the same kind of running. Run on non-practice days with stairs. One day a week off. Another huge thing is to EAT RIGHT! Lots of color on the plate (fruits and veg) , lean protien , complex carbs , and limiting sugar to after games and workouts
shooter27 116 Report post Posted October 19, 2011 I played Juniors and College as some of the others here. My thought was that you want to break your summer training up into two parts. The first part, you want to focus on getting more athletic, from an overall perspective. Still work on hockey-specific things, but keep that down to 1-2 times per week, spend the bulk of your time becoming a better athlete - stronger (particularly through your core), faster, more agile, and more powerful. As you get closer to the season (say, last 1/3 of summer) begin to focus more and more on hockey specific. Skating more, different work in the weight room, on the track, etc. I always found that was the best way for me to prepare.
