Buying New skates, APX VS TOTALONES

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Well for the past couple months I've been researching about the apx skates, reading all the reviews and threads on them. I finally decided on either buying x7.0 or APX. I am currently wearing x20s and I have pain on my small toe. I went to my LHS ( scoffs ) today and tried on both the apx and 7.0, I was extremely happy that I had no pain on the small toe. I had the same pain with the x7.0. I'm guessing this is because they increased the width of the toe box on the apx. I was about to purchase them until the person helping me told me to try on more skates before I dropped 900$. I tried grafs, Easton, RBK, they all felt heavier and had random spots of discomfort. The last pair I tried on were the TOTALONES. I could not believe how good they felt. I had apx in my left feet and T1s on my right. When I was asked which felt better, my heart told me apx but my feet and brain told me t1s. The heel lock was amazing on the totalones and the extra width at the toe box made it extremely comfortable. As I was walking around the store, I started to get pain at the top of my feet, turns out the apx isn't deep enough for me and I was getting lace bite kinda. Anyways I told him I would come back tomorrow after I do some more research tonight.

I've read that TOTALONES are for strong skaters that like that powerful stride, and APX are for those who do those quick choppy strides. When I told the employee, he said that was complete BS and it's all about the fit. Is this true? Does a pair of skate actually make you skate faster? Like if ovechkin were to wear TOTALONES instead of APX would he skate slower? There must be a reason why the top players are wearing apxs and not totalones... Sorry for the long post, Im just confused and kinda disappointed my feet just don't fit apxs...

Thanks

It sounds like the associate was bang-on, and your own observations on comfort and fit were as well. The TotalOne looks to be the skate for you. All that stuff about strides is indeed marketing, and there are a lot more players in Supreme than you might notice. The Supremes fit wider overall than Vapor, especially in the forefoot area and the shape of the heel. They are a deeper boot as well. Did you try them both on in a 'D' width? Might as well give the APX a shot in the EE as well, just to see if you can compare that and the Supreme. One other aspect about the Vapor boot is that the cut of it puts you on more of an aggressive lean than the Supreme, though not something you couldn't adjust for in a few skates.

Sounds like you got a guy who knows what he's doing. If you read the skate threads here, you'll find that's a common theme: buy for fit. If you want to play with the blades and mounts, to lean forward more or less, change radius, rocker, etc., do that once you've got a boot that fits. That's something I've learned here from reading a whole lot of posts on the subject.

What sense would it make to buy a skate for the alleged (Bauer marketing department) stride, when the boot hurts your foot?

Fit, fit, fit. By the sounds, you found the perfect fit in the TO's.

No skate is going to be better for a particular stride, it's more about the foot and the fit.
