Shin guards and ankle protection

So last week in beer league I took a slapper right off my inner high ankle (right where the eyelet of the skates are just below my shin guard). Thought my ankle was broken, but x-rays were negative. Hurt like a SOB though. I chalked it up to an unavoidable hockey injury, but then I wondered about two things (1) I wear my tongue outside the shin guards and flop the tongue, would there be more ankle protection if I tucked the tongue under the shin guard? (2) I have cheap-o shins (Bauer One15s), are there other shins on the market that have better protection in the ankle area? Obviously, higher end shins offer more protection in the shin, calf, knee areas, but what about ankles areas?

I think you are better off with the shin guards over the tongue for protection. Also, check the skate fender threads for ankle protection.

Make sure you have the right sized shin guards as well, as in there shouldn't be a gap between the top of the boot and the guard.

Going over the tongue would also allow you to wear a longer length shin pad, which would cover more area and be more protective.

Depending on how big of a gap you have between your shins and skates, picking up some that are 2" longer than you current ones wouldn't be a bad idea.
