Do you tip your sharpener?

I think its a good idea because most people dont know that they should tip for a sharpening. If they think you did a good job they should tip if they see the jar available.

I do tip if I wait for my skates. But, why is it now expected? It's a service that we pay for done by an employee that is being paid to perform a job.

Do you tip your doctor, nurse, dentist, or auto mechanic? How about the cashier a the store? What about the furnace repair guy?

You charge me about $60.00 an hour for your service, if I toss in a $5.00 tip (which I do when waiting for skates), I'm at nearly $110.00/hour.

If you want to be seen as a professional do a good job, know your business, and don't expect to be tipped for doing it.

By your explanation I should pay extra for you to do a "good job" Unless you're fixing something wrong with my skates what you really mean is I should pay you extra to do your job without messing it up.

Tipping for sharpening has never been expected by me or any of the guys in my shop. Sharpeners appreciate it, they do not expect it. I will say that when I have a service guy working for me(plugging a tire at the gas station, a delivery guy hauling something into or out of my house)I will always tip them enough to buy lunch. I appreciate what they are doing for me right at that moment when it matters. When you are in the service business it is simply paying it forward in my world.

Darkstar: That's exactly my point. You tip the guy plugging your tire because he's changing his schedule to to accommodate your needs. He went beyond what you would expect him to do.

Sharpeners appreciate a tip is not the same as sharpeners should be tipped.

I've spent many years behind the bar working in a service job. I expected tips there as it's part of my pay. It's also social convention. I currently work in medicine, I provide service everyday. It would not occur to me to expect a tip for doing my job.

Should I tip the guy that rang up my stick and took my money?

If you simply sharpen my skates without messing them up when I drop them off and pick them up 24 hours later why should you be tipped? If on the other hand you notice something wrong and fixed it or you know the ice is soft this week where you know I'm playing and change my hollow accordingly then absolutely you should be tipped.

If I stop in on my way to pick up tape and ask if you've got time to do my skates and you can, certainly a tip is in order.

With the exception of a few jobs such as hospitality a tip should be used for the person that goes above and beyond not for acting like I ruined his day by asking him to do 5 minutes of work for me when he's standing at the counter texting his girlfriend.

rachael...a casual observation from a non-sharpener, who doesn't work in any service industry: You won't encourage a non tipper to tip just because there is a jar on the counter...and anyone who would offer a tip...would probably do so anyway.

Not if you drink both, depressants and stimulants cancel each other out!

edit : reference to Law Goalie's post, not sure why this was delayed
