are sticks becoming TOO light?

Recommended Posts

i have tried both the apx and rs (preferred the apx). both are the lightest sticks ive ever used. my hands are ok, moreso smooth than fast and i notice a few times a game where i 'over stickhandle' the puck. everyone over stickhandles, but this started occurring more often with these two new sticks. of course with lighter sticks durability also comes into question. ive used 4 different RS and they all felt fragile and broke relatively quickly (less than two months). the apx sample size isn't large enough for me to judge. i preferred the eq50 over the RS. im wondering what everyone else thinks, are the sticks getting too light?

I don't think the sticks are too light right now. The first gen stealth and the original 7k I believe were both under 400 grams. The lightest stick from a major company right now is 415 I believe. Companies have made great high end sticks that are light and durable. For example the one95 and totalONE. As for the stickhandling problem, it is just a matter of getting use to the stick.

i agree the one95/t1 are great and durable. im moreso talking about the latest offerings such as the apx and RS. i used the RS for 3-4 months so i dont think it was a getting used to it thing.

It may not be that sticks are too light for you, but the RS and APX just aren't good matches for you. Neither of them are regarded for being great sticks for stickhandling.

Sorry, what? Where did you get that conclusion from?

I mean in regards for feel. I don't think they are bad or poor, I am just not saying they are not exceptional like a one95 or the DD blades warrior had. While I will admint I have not used neither the RS or APX sticks for extended time, I am going off of what my team mates have said about them.

You can't take claims a few teammates have made and apply it to an overall vague attribute such as feel/stick handling.

I'm not sure "too light" is really much of an issue. I went from using Bauer X:40 and X:50 sticks to now using CCM CL+ sticks. Big difference in weight. It took me at least 4 games to be trully used to the weight difference and how the blades felt when stick handling. Now that I'm used to the weight and puck feel....I can stick handle just as good as before. You just may be a person who requires a little more weight/meat feel with sticks. I for one prefer the lighter feel.

As for durability....really depends on how much abuse you're getting. I don't think a few stick checks from an adult league are going to do too terribly much to a high end or low end stick. But you start blocking slappers and taking heavy slashes....well then you might have an issue.

I've not used the RS or APX so I can't speak for how they feel. But using another brands high end (and at one point industry lightest) stick I don't feel any less durability then using a lower end/heavier weighted stick.

Why not go the other way... use a really light stick, then try one of the entry point sticks and see how that feels?

I came from sticks that were 650grams, now to using sticks that are sub 500grams. At the end of the day, its how YOU feel about them. There are definitely people (myself included) who are particular about gear, especially sticks, gloves and skates.

I'd love to get my hands on an original Stealth again. Probably my favourite stick of all time.

But that aside, I do find the balance of a stick to be a little more important now. I don't like low end sticks because they're so blade-heavy.

You will eventually just get used to whatever you have. My S19 didn't have the best feeling blade, but it only took a couple of games to get used to the nuances of it.

I like a light stick, but I think balance is at least as important. My APX is the least blade heavy lightweight stick I've found. It's particularly important when you cut the stick down a few inches like I need to.
