Solidus433 1 Report post Posted April 5, 2012 Ive never used a composite stick as I have not played on a surface that would not destroy one fast, so needless to say, I have only used wood sticks. cooperalls 4 Report post Posted April 5, 2012 wood is the least durable material for off-ice surfaces. If it's very smooth, you can use composite, but really, ABS plastic is the only material that has the durability for concrete/asphalt/sportcourt. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
wetwilly17 6 Report post Posted April 5, 2012 there are durable wood blades for outdoor use. i have a bunch of bauer one60s that dont splinter. they do wear a little faster than abs but are much lighter than abs and have way better puck feel compared to abs. i also use the wood/abs/wood laminate blades for the best of both worlds for outdoor abrasive surfaces but these type blades are getting harder to find. It's really a personal thing, if your old school like me and like the feel of lumber then use stick tape and rub some candle wax along the bottom to protect the tape. New tape every game. Of course for asphalt or concrete wood is the wrong choice.I've exclusively used composite shafts (and recently 1 pieces) since 2000, and I have never broke a single shaft. I really don't think durability is a legitimate reason to sticking to wood sticks, especially with sticks like the ST out there.I'd recommend you buy a standard shaft (since all ABS blades are standard), and go that route. It will be a higher initial investment, but I think the lighter weight and ability to swap curves will make up for it. You will also have a consistent feel from stick to stick.
