With the variety of ceilings, ceiling heights, lighting, etc. of the different rinks, I would think that tint may help or hinder based on those potential variables.

A dark tinted visor seems really pointless. There's significantly less light and UV exposure in a hockey rink than there is in a fighter jet.

Yeah, but it looks cool...

Just put some mirrored aviator sunglasses on under your visor.

Speaking of sunglasses, he might like it because it adds a contrast that he is comfortable with? I know once I have my Ray Bans on I don't want to ever take them off even inside of buildings.
