cutting a vapor xx ops

Recommended Posts

Yesterday i brought a vapor xx in to my lhs and aksed the guy there if you could cut the blade off it and put a replacement blade in it (dont like curve thats on the stick already). He said no because of the taper on the stick and the way its made. He said he could try but it would defeat the purpose of the stick, kickpoint etc. My question is simply can it be done. Ive seen other kids with cut down ops like eastons and the TPS models. is the vapor any different.

Yes, I did it, but forgot where I cut. I believe Buzz has one up in the sell section as well, and oddly enough he has/had another because he traded for mine.

Try heating it up first.....Mine came out (Blade) when I heated it up.

That does make sense though since the heat would kill the foam in the stick and wouldn't damage the shaft (if you don't overheat) since it's hollow.

I think the taper near the blade of the XX is thinner than normal.....when i went to buy my XV i compared it side by side to the XX and felt that the taper gets really thin where you see the fuse point, much thinner than a tapered blade i would think. If you did cut it, it would have to be higher up on the shaft.

I actually just did this the other day. Felt like playing around and sacrificed the XX to the hockey gods...Right where the fuse pt was, I noticed a few weeks ago it started to chip away and I could see where it looked like a blade met the shaft. So I took someone's advice from MSH and just began to slowly heat it up right at the fuse pt. I pulled, heated, pulled, heated, chipped some more of the material at the fuse, cut with a utility knife, heated, etc, and BAM! The blade just came right out. It's actually 2 pieces, blade and shaft, nothing more. They just put some extra material over the fuse. You have to heat it up more than with a 2 piece to get the glue going, so be careful, I could see where you might damage the shaft. I did start to smell epoxy cooking or something. They def. use an epoxy like material to hold the blade in the shaft. Maybe a little smithering of glue too, not sure. I DID NOT see any foam! Perhaps I fried the heck outta it? Not sure, but there was none when I was done.

The taper on the XX is narrow, very narrow. Moreso than on my Synthesis. Easton and Mission L2 DO NOT FIT. Too big for the XX narrow taper. My R2 Nash went right in though. No need for any extra tape around the hosel or anything, and has not gotten loose. I was hoping that the Bauer taper blade would work, but from what I've read here, it appears the XV is not as narrow a taper as on the XX so it may not work. Try an R2 it worked for me.

Ohh and FYI - Doing my method above resulted in not having to use any extra endplugs to make up for length, nor did I have to cut the shaft anymore, or flip it around. Where the blade came out, the R2 blade went right in.

I cut mine and stuck a XV blade in and it worked fine. I think I had to take an extra inch off but that was easily made up with a plug on top. For some reason I thought I could shoot better with it as a two piece as opposed to a one piece.

Yeah you could cut some off the taper and fit other brands in there, but I think the guy who posted this thread wanted to know if you could do a removal without cutting the shaft, or as little as possible. I personally hate using endplugs, with broken or unbroken sticks. I dunno what it is, but I just can't used to it. But I can say you just shot my hopes down! I was hoping to be able to get an XV blade in there without cutting, guess I'm gonna have to.
