Some sort of hand pain

Recommended Posts

I noticed during a pick-up game yesterday my top hand started to hurt while gripping my stick, I was wondering if it has something to do with the vibrations in the stick that occur when trying to swat the puck or blocking passes with 1 hand on the stick? I haven't had anything like a slash or falling on my hand so I can rule an apparent injury out.

There are so many parts to the hand, and so many things you do with it, it may be impossible for casual, relatively uninformed guessers to come up with the cause of your problem. It's not necessarily from playing hockey.

I have noticed this problem as well before. For me, it seems to come from torquing on the hand - think pressing forwards on your pinky knuckle and backwards on your index knuckle, which is a result of (on the lower hand) shooting and (upper hand) playing with one hand on the stick, and I think it is caused by the stick in one hand being twisted past your comfort zone.

A forearm stretch helps me when I experience this pain. You could try loosening up your wrists pre game, hold the stick in the middle and rotate your wrists or interlock fingers and roll wrists.
