9.5 radius 1/2 hollow skating feels like quicksand

Recommended Posts

A little background first. Been out of hockey for 15 years and having trouble getting skates to feel right. I have a pair of reebok 6k that just don't fit right but on the ice I felt pretty good as far as skating, I felt fast but not as stable as I would like ( felt off balance when standing, like faceoffs) I never profiled them and just got a 1/2 hollow on them. So I got a hold of a pair of 9k pro stock (2007 models) skates from tim Gleason, they are profiled to 9.5 (I had the pro shop check) but they also have 35/65 written on them, these skates fit awesome!!! so i deceided to try them out. They have tuuk ls2 runners on them and I had these sharpened to 1/2 and tried them out yesterday, well at first I almost switched back to my 6k right away, I felt like I had to focus on leaning forward to stay balanced but after about 10mins I adjusted and it felt ok and my agility was amazing! I could turn on a dime and felt like I could make any move I wanted...but I was slow as a turtle!! I felt like I was in quicksand and my legs were dead after 1 period!! So I am looking for tips on what I should do.. I was thinking about just trying a 5/8 hollow but I feel like it has something do with the radius because 1/2 works fine with my reeboks 6k with the e pro holders. Is it possible that these skates have a negative rocker ? I don't know I am real new to all this. Should I just get them profiled and start over? If so what should I get them profiled to? I am 6foot 195lbs play forward and use to play AA Sorry for typos I posted this from iPhone. Thanks!!!

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was thinking, just try a 9/16 but I was not sure if it was the hollow, radius, Tuuks, or pitch that was causing me to be so slow, I really felt like if I stopped skating I would glide for like 8 ft before I would stop. i have no idea what the radius really is. The skate says 9.5 radius on a sticker but also has faded marker 35/65 on the holder so I don't really know. The guy at the shop did say it looks like a 9.5.

So after reading that post is it save to assume that 35/65 is for a Cag machine number and the 9.5 is a different type of machine?

Maybe they were 35/65 and then switched to 9.5. I have this scary thought that maybe since Gleason is a defenseman that these have a negative pitch, or they are just setup for a very strong skater and thats why i feel awesome with my turns and movement but so dang slow and tired. I think i should just get them profiled but have no idea what profile to get.. Any ideas?

I would not suggest anything regarding your above questions. Hopefully some of the guru's will chime in and provide you with suggestion. Really don't like to give advice on profiles I do not have enough knowledge in that area.

Not a guru. But it sounds like the profile is okay for you just too shallow as said before. Its all pp but I weigh 165 and skate on a 3/4 hollow at the same radius. Also I would tweak one variable at a time and personally would jump an 8th rather than a 16th on the hollow.

A 35/65 is something a defenseman is more likely to use, but it would not feel sluggish, that's a long flat spot so glide should be good. It's almost impossible to correctly measure a 9.5 radius on a used skate, especially since the radius is altered a little bit with each sharpening. If 1/2" worked on your old skates it still should be good. Suggest you go get them radiused and then evaluate. At least then you'll know for sure what's in there, then adjusting based on your symptoms will be easy at that point.

Yea, I got sick of trying to make the 9ks work so I ended up getting some new stock 18k and had them profiled to 9in and use a 9/16 hollow which works out perfect for me now, I might try 5/8 in the future. Thanks for the replies.
