How do you shoot with the RS stick?

Recommended Posts

RS 85 flex coming from EQ50 85 flex. It's alittle funny but I just want to know if anyone else has felt this.

With the EQ50 the more I muscle it the harder the shot, plain and simple. With the RS it is the opposite, the harder I try the worse the velocity but if I don't try it flies off the stick. So in the end I can shoot harder with the EQ50 but it takes longer to get the shot off. The RS I can get the shot off faster because I don't have to muscle it but it is abit slower velocity wise in the end.

Love both sticks. Both are what I call "one handed sticks" with the RS having great feel on the toe of the blade.

How do I get the most velocity out of my RS?

PS: I'm a snap shot guy.

Thanks

If I had to take a crack at it, I'd guess it's the flex discrepancy. Yes, I know they're both rated at 85. Many people felt that the RS is whippier than rated at each given flex, which sounds exactly like what you're experiencing. With stiffer sticks, your arm/wrist/hand speed combined with force you put into it determines how quick the release is and the velocity of the shot. With more flexible sticks, you have to change your shot mechanics because the slight "lag" of the shaft loading more will throw off the sequence enough to effect the release and velocity. It will take some getting used to, but try not to power through the puck quite as much as you're used to. You can still put a lot of force into it, but you're going to have to slow your mechanics just a bit to accommodate increased shaft loading and kick to ulitmately reach the same end result.

I think you nailed it:). In the end I found that the sweet spot, because of the difference between the sticks, was about one inch farther from the heel of the the blade. It doesn't sound like much but it took four skates to find it:). So now I have to reprogram my shooting instincts, which is not as easy as you would think.
