Bauer Skate Choice and Size Opinions Please

Recommended Posts

I've been a lurker for a long time and there’s a wealth of useful information on this board. You guys are a super helpful bunch!

I had the One75 in 6.0 D. I wasn’t fitted right at the LHS I went to and ended up with a skate too small. It was just too narrow and the skate didn’t have enough volume. Sold that off and I’m looking at another pair of skates now. If I’ve read correctly, is the One80 supposed to be the One75 replacement, but with a different fit and more boot volume?

Is this correct?

"One55 -> One70->One7

One75-> One80->One8

One95->One100->One9"

I tried the One7 in 6.0 D and it was too long, toes couldn’t touch the toe cap at all. Heel lock was fantastic (don't know if this changes with size?). There was A LOT more volume and my feet felt much more comfortable in the skate compared to the one75s, even though they’re both 6D. The LHS said I should be a 5.0 or 5.5. They didn’t have a 5.5, so I tried a Vapor X4.0 in 5D and immediately felt my forefoot cramping; vapor fit’s out. In that vapor 5D, my big toe could touch the toe cap but it didn’t feel too uncomfortable. One thing i noted was in the Vapor, my heels didn't feel locked in at all. Is that how it's supposed to feel? That made me feel as though a sz 5 length is right if my heels could be tucked all the way back. Or am i mistaken?

So… I’m uncertain about the length I should be getting. I can’t decide between a 5 or 5.5. The LHS said if he were me he’ll get a 5. The LHS doesn’t bring in half sizes so I have no way of trying a 5.5 out. I’m really paranoid after my One75 being such a poor fit on me, don’t want to experience that again. LHS said it was my call but it's hard to decide.

I went to print out this Brannock measuring guide to get a rough measurement of my foot. It's quite inadequate as i can't tell when my heel is at the right spot. But according to this print out, i'm a between a 5 and 6. Don't know if that translates to the skate size as well?

How much length difference, MM-wise, are we talking about, for half-sizes?

Do the lengths for both Vapor and Supreme run the same?

Since I’m a 5/5.5, are my skates considered Jr? There are no 5/5.5 Sr skates, am I right? (Ignoring customs). I read that Jr skates are built less stiff etc, not sure how it’ll impact me. I’m a small guy, about 140 lbs.

I’m looking at the One80 or One100. Since I’ll be getting Jr size, getting the One100 doesn’t look too bad, money-wise. But not sure if it’s too stiff for my ‘weight-class’?

Any thoughts and advice is highly appreciated, thanks guys.

Well, it sounds like the new Supremes are a good fit for you with adequate volume and good heel lock so and the Vapors didn't fit well so you should stick with the Supreme line if you're going with Bauer. Before making a final decision I'd try on as many brands as you can - you may find something that feels even better or it may just confirm that the Supremes are the right choice.

Anything below size 6 is a Junior size. edit - JR answered the stiffness question.

I'd go with the tightest size you can fit into without it hurting your feet or bending your toes. If your toes touch without being cramped before baking they'll likely just feather then ends after baking and break in. Plus, you can always have the skates stretched if necessary if they do feel a little small after you've tried to break them in on your own. You can't make skates that are too big smaller. So I'd also lean toward the 5 over the 5.5, but try them on first - if they kill your feet or your toes have to bend to get your feet in then go up to 5.5.

I believe the length of the Vapor and Supremes should be the same, but the width and overall fit is different.

The difference between half sizes is 4-5mm.

Take that Supreme, open up the skate (loosen laces and pull tongue forward, and put it on. Stand up and tap toe into floor. Now your foot should be all the way in the front of the skate. Determine from how much space you have in the back whether or not you need a smaller size. Always better to go snug than loose - keep in mind the skate will open up after heat molding.

5.5 is a SR-stiff skate, but, a JR.

Thank you, althoma1 and JR Boucicaut! Very helpful advice, much appreciated!

Do the higher end Supreme (One80, One100) fit differently? I did more searching on the board and came across conflicting opinions. Some say the One80 fits exactly the same as the One75, others say the One80 is larger. Who's right?

Since i tried the One7 which are the One70 equivalents, do the One70s have a different fit from the One80 and One100?

With other brands, is that 5.5 being senior stiff true as well, or does it maybe go to 5.0 with some lines?

ONE80 is the ONE75 replacement. The ONE100/ONE.9 is a standalone fit, it shares it with the TotalONE and nothing else.

Yea, i hear you. So does the One80 have the same fit as the One75? I came across some conflicting thoughts on this subject:

“fits the same as the one95/one100”

vs

“in my experience i feel that the one75 and one 80's fits are almost identical”

Not sure if it matters, but i managed to get hold of the sole length for a One80 5D. I drew a straight line on a piece of paper, set a wooden block at the edge, put my feet beside the line, pushing my heel against the wooden block to compare the length. Length is almost spot on, with just a little excess length to compensate for the edges of the heel cup where it curves upwards (not sure how to describe this). Is there a better way to do this without the skates on hand?
