2011 CCM U+09 Shoulders

Recommended Posts

I had been on the fence about trying these, but once they hit the clearance racks I decided to take a chance. I picked up a medium and I really like the fit. The one piece shoulder cap and bicep guard w/ stretch zones is my favorite feature and really what attracted me to these pads in the first place. The clavical guard is little bulky, but that is a trade off for the completely un-bulky shoulder caps.

Although there is a lot to like about these pads, holy hell are these things hot! I tried them out yesterday and had to strip off my undershirt halfway through the skate; no ventilation. Has anyone else experienced this with these pads, or is it just me? Also curious about what other U+09 owners have to say about their experiences.

I own these and yes, the one downside is that they got hot quickly. If it's 50+ degrees outside I won't wear an undershirt because I know I'll be to hot during gametime. I normally wear a longsleeve Reebok undershirt during fall/winter seasons and I'm ok because it's really cold in the rink. But spring/summer I can't with these shoulder pads because it's too hot. However, the low profile, fit, and protection is so good that it's an okay trade off. Just have to make sure to wash them moreso during spring/summer then I normally would.

I don't mind the clavical padding area, but I also got mine in a small. I stand 5' 11" and weight about 160, so this may be why I don't feel it's bulky around the clavical?

End story....LOVE these pads despite the heat. And if you can find them on clearance they are unbeatable at such a low price.

Edit: I've also noticed my CCM U+ CL gloves also feel like ovens. I end up taking them off inbetween shifts and during intermissions because of how hot my hands get. Maybe just inherit with CCM protective gear?? I haven't used the CCM U+ Pro shoulder pads so I don't know how well they vent.

The U+Pros aren't that much better, though personally I've had few issues with ventilation, it is only the few instances where I did have a problem that made it worth mentioning.

My back up gloves are the CCM U+08. They are noticibly hotter than my other gloves, but I don't seem to notice it until I'm on the bench.

Yeah, I'm a few shifts in when I notice it with the gloves.

I haven't noticed a gross amount of over heating while using the U+ 09, but they are noticeably warmer then previous shoulder pads I've used. Again, not so much an issue that I'll switch, but something worth mentioning for sure.

Seems like alot of NHLers are wearing this pad, or the U+pros at least. I didn't go with them due to the weight ~2.3lbs and the fact that many have complained about them being hot, but they look like a nice low profile protective pad.

I have them and I'm a big fan. I got them last January and there are virtually no signs of wear. I throw mine in the wash every couple of months and have had no issues with any breakdown. I really like the low profile look and they are very protective. I had the Sher-wood 5030s before these and I did not notice any increase in the overall heat level.

I think it's a great pad and more importantly a pad that fits my body well while offering great protection and a low profile. I suppose there's always going to be trade-offs, so I will learn to live with the heat.
