What's going on here? Is is me? Skates too sharp?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I also wasn't sure what to use as a search reference, so I figured it was easier to pose the question here. If it's a repost, kindly point me in the right direction.

I just got myself a pair of Vapor APX skates. I took my new wheels out for a spin last night and love the skate. They fit like a glove. My question is when stopping (no matter which side (left/right) or if I "snow plow", "t-stop" or "v-stop" (backwards)) I can't stop smoothly and feel as if I'm going to fall over. Instead of a nice smooth 'swoosh' of a stop (ie. ________) it's more of a choppy (ie _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) stop. I'm a strong skater. Love the boot stiffness. Is the skate too sharp? It's sharpened at a standard 1/2" and I even rubbed the blade on the plastic on the doors. Is the boot still too new and needs time to work itself in? I've skated in the TotalONEs but never had this issue. Please enlighten me.

yea usually a 1/2"... although it is summer and I have been using a flatter hollow 5/8" (when I play on soft ice)... but we were on the hard/cold ice last night, so I went back to the 1/2"...

...or the initial sharpening wasn't good - a lot of bad sharpeners do not set the hollow well on the first. Get them resharpened and report back.

Yeah, I had this exact problem with my newest pair and a new sharpening totally fixed it.

Did they flat grind them before the first sharpening? It's hard to get a good hollow if you are starting with a bad edge to begin with.
