newbie here, shin guard comfortability question, need help, opinions

Recommended Posts

hi boys and girls,im a newbie here and have a pretty simple question.im a roller hockey player for around 15 years i play in indoor house leagues all over.i find that shin guards with the top strap are way more comfortable.what i mean is shin guards with the strap that wraps around the back of the knee and velcros to the other side of the shin guard.i find this alot more comfortable and also keeps the shin guard much more in place and gives me alot more mobility and doesnt make it feel bulky.now the only shins ive seen that have this are mylec, franklin or older brand shin guards (koho).does anyone have any recommendations where to find any shins like these.any help or opinions is much appreciated thank you

I agree with you. Bauer One95 and One90's have the upper strap that wraps right around, if you can find any these are a very good pad. The replacement of these, the TotalOne, has the same straps but I have never tried them on to comment on how good they are.

these are great i did buy a pair of bauer vapor x30's in a 15 inch and they were good protection but very bulky and the strap wasnt that high.believe it or not i used to wear a pair of mylec air-flo shins for some games cause they are so light and comfortable.they have a strap around the top knee cap that wraps around the back of the knee.thats what i meant as a top strap.

CCM SG100 Referee shin guards have the top strap above the knee: http://www.hockeymon...ards-sg100.html

I just started using a pair to ref and haven't taken any shots off them or fallen on them yet, but I did take a couple good whacks at the faceoff circle and the absorbed those well. The plastic is just as hard as that of any other shin guard (and the plastic extends all the way to the bottom - the bottom section is just covered in fabric, but there's plastic underneath). The knee pad is a little more low profile then the pads I play in. I wouldn't be hesitant to use them as player pads - I just found a used pair for a good price and will sometimes ref and play on the same day and its nice to have dry pads to play in.

Usually the lower end models have the straight strap behind the knee. (which is what I'm assuming your talking about) I had a old pair of bauers that where that way and I loved them. Then I got a pair of ccm +u with the cross strap and I like them way better, but I also use shin guard tape to get them nice and tight.

Virtually all of the NHL players use Jofa shin pads... well, now Reebok owns Jofa, and they have taken the Jofa designs and kept that line going. You can see on every pair of RBK shin pads "powered by Jofa". I have also been wearing Jofa shin pads for 20+ years. In that time I have tried different set's from Bauer, CCM, Itech, Franklin, and probably a few that I have forgotten about! Anyways, I always seem to go back to my old pair of Jofa 6070's. If you want great comfort and pro-level protection, give these a try.

Most of the Jofa line, did not come with any sort of built-in strapping system, so you either have to use shin-pad tape, or get a shin-pad sock, which is what I use to keep them on really secure and tight. Some of the last models from Jofa, 8090 and 9040, 9090, all come with strapping systems, as well, when Reebok took over the line, they implemented a build-in strapping system on all of their shin pads.

My old Jofa 6070's have started to form a crack in the knee cap, so I have just bought a pair of RBK Platinum Series shin pads. These are a special line that was made just for "Source for Sports", but in effect, they are simply a variation of the current 9K model. In my opinion, they are about the best shin out there for Roller, as they have a huge vented area on the inside of the pad, that allow air to flow through and keep things cool. While still keeping all of the standard Jofa design features. I compared them against the 11K, and prefered the Platinum's (9K) better for Roller.

Go onto epinions to read a great review of one of the top models of the Jofa line the 9040. The reviewer lists out all of the Jofa acronyms and design features:

i dont mind the lower end models as long as their comfortable and provide some sort of shock absorbsion(i think thats spelled right) id buy a franklin or older koho type shin as long as their not bulky and they are comfortable.just want to say thank you to everyone on their help i really appreciate you taking the time to give me your opinions

+1 on the platinums. I have them in elbow guards and they are one of the best around for protection and comfort (and some shins on the way).
