Stick change up

Recommended Posts

Hey so basically Ive used Easton Sakics since I was 14ish at 100flex. Back then I was 5'10, 5'11 140lbs probably so I don't know why I used that flex.

Today I am 21, 6'0 195lbs and using a custom Base stick, 100 flex with a Sakic curve. Everytime I shoot I rip shots over the net and I am finding the curve to be too much. I was looking at curves at my hockey store and was thinking about going for the Stamkos. Is the Stamkos curve similar to the Iginla?

I was also thinking about possibly going down to 85 flex as well from 100. I am average in strength for my height/weight and I know other NHLers use lower flex sticks that are much bigger and stronger. Would this be a good idea?

If you are no longer comfortable and not getting flex out of your stick then yeah, why not try.

I don't really think that it matters what weight you are. I know smaller guys who are better players that get so much turn in the hips and generate so much energy they easily flex a 110. I'm 5'10" 225 and I use an 85. I get more feel and more whip out of it. I can't even feel the puck with a 100.

Try one of your team mates in warm ups first....

dkmiller nailed it. Feel and flex is so personal that provided you are within a reasonable range (considering 85-100 as opposed to 75-100 lets say) that the best way to find out is to try.

Stamkos is lower in lie than the Iginla, a very slightly open heel curve as opposed to a mid in the Iginla. Very different from your Sakic.

Keep in mind that when bigger guys opt for a lower flex it has a lot to do with their shooting motion and how far their hands extend past the puck on the shot release. Good luck!

Stamkos is more like a Modano/Zetterberg/Savard. Kane would be closer to the Sakic style blades with less loft, though it is still a fairly deep curve.
