Shin pump?

Recommended Posts

There are times when I can skate a whole game, and be perfectly fine. Some games, I find my shins burning like hell from being over worked. I don't think it's shin splints, nor do I think it's my skates. Anyone else have this problem???

Edit: the muscle on the outside of my lower legs

I remember hearing something about shin pain/splints being related to a pair of skates that aren't sharp enough. However, I'm not really sure if that holds any truth.

I heard from a skate fitter at the LHS that this can be caused by skates being too big for you. Don't know how true it is but I figured I'd throw it out there.

This wouldn't surprise me. Doing a lot of extra work.

Mine often burn in that area.

Pain in that area is often a sign that you are too much on your heels when using the muscles of the lower leg. Runners who get that pain are usually landing too heavy on their heel.

That makes sense too. My underpronation likely causes a lot of weight onto the outside of my heel and foot with every stride.

Skates that are to big or to wide can make you clinch your toes, that tightens up the muscles that run up the sides of your shin.
