Blisters in skates

Recommended Posts

Do you guys get these often from your skates? I wear these gel guards that don't really help and its starting to get annoying (ive done this for the past 3 years). Im thinking of buying a new pair of skates but it won't be middle line Eastons... I have the 555 Stealths.

Ive never had this problem ever in my life before Ive always had Bauers and before these when I was young I had a top of the line Easton skate. Really upsetting

You're getting the blisters because that particular skate's heel cup doesn't fit you correctly. The blister comes from abrasion, which means your heel is picking up and down in the boot.

I can say with 100% certainty that I've never had a foot blister in my life, and I've been in a lot of skates.

Damn your lucky. When I got my current Eastons I thought I'd just get blisters for a week or two and then they'd be broken in...guess not. I think Im going to go out and buy a new pair sooner than later (Nexus 1000s :D)

I wouldn't say lucky, just selective as to what I'll wear. I must admit my situation is a bit different as to the fact that I test skates, so I feel for those who buy a skate and have them not fit correctly. Just have to really assess the boot and make sure your heel's tight and isn't moving.

Another reason is that you are in a skate that isn't narrow enough for your foot and your feet pronate (your ankle rolls inwards). The pronation causes your foot to roll in the boot every time you take a stride, it's only a very tiny movement but the constant rubbing against the boot gives you blisters on the inside part of your heel. I solved the problem by getting the narrowest boots on the market, Alkali's for inline and Grafs for ice, and getting the boot significantly punched on the outside of the foot to effectively shift the center of my feet a fraction to the outside of the blade / chassis and using yellow superfeet. It's not the greatest fix in the world but it gets me by.

If you want a proper fix you need to get the narrowest boot you can for your feet AND get the blades realigned specifically for your feet (I am not a fan of fitting wedges or wasting money on custom orthotics, neither worked properly for me) and or getting the boot punched out.

Here is one of the best articles that I have ever come across that explains what is happening, my hat off to the author Todd Alexander, before I read this I had no idea what was going on and why my feet hurt so much:
