Rink near Holmdel, NJ?

Recommended Posts

I live in Union Beach NJ (a few towns over) and the rinks i regularly go to are:

Jersey Shore Arena, located in Wall (30 minutes away via parkway south)

Red Bank Armory, located in Red Bank (20 minutes away via 35 going south)

The Arenas at Woodbridge, located in Woodbridge (20 minutes away via 36/route 9 going north)

Occasionally ill go to Howell ice world but thats about 45 minutes away on the parkway going south.

There's also a brand new ice rink/complex being built in Middletown that is absolutely massive, but that's still a few months away from being completed.

Awesome, thanks! Are any of these good for lower level (beginner/intermediate) pickup?

I was actually looking at this "Next Level" training facility. Maybe they can help with my stride and shot.

Id say they are all good for some pickup regardless of skill.

Red bank has by far the nicest kept facility and ice, the only issue is they only have open hockey times at like 12 in the afternoon on wendsdays. Mostly filled with dudes on break from work, or kids with the day off school.

Jersey Shore Arena has three rinks in it where the ice ranges from crap to ehhh quality, especially now after the storm. This is where i play the most as they have pickup hockey normally every Friday Saturday and Sunday (depending on the high school hockey schedule) around 7 or 8 at night with skill ranges from people who have never played before to the best players ive ever played with, its a good time regardless though. They also normally have open hockey around 12 in the afternoon every weekday.

Woodbridge has open ice ever Saturday at 10pm and the ice is alright but the quality of people there leave something to be desired. Kids who are good and want everyone to know they are good take up the majority of the ice time and like to come off probably once or twice a night leaving everyone else to warm the bench.

Wow, Red Bank is one cool facility! I just went to their website. Actually a converted armory... very nice!

They ice time sucks badly though. Even the public skating is only a couple hours on weekends. What the crap do they do with the ice during the day during the week??

Woodbridge also has Hockey Monkey down the block, best place to buy equipment in NJ.

I played some pick up at the Wall rink about 17 years ago, and would describe the pickup as beginner/intermediate. I was in college at the time, and recall their having had open ice pickup duing the day (around 1pm) on 1 or 2 weekdays. The level of play was a bit higher during the evening skate (around 7-8:30) pick up games. A few douchebags apparent, I recall a fight breaking out between a guy who obviously knew how to hockey fight, and another guy who did not really seem to want to fight, nor knew how. For the most part though, it was good enough.
