Wood Stick High School Game

Recommended Posts

Last night in a regular season ending game Mounds View High School played North St Paul in a game where ALL player used Christian Bros Wood Stcks.

I was in attendance, the wood sticks definitely changed the game. The first noticeable change was the sound of the game. We all know the sound a wood stick makes from a shot but what you don't think about is how the sound of stick on stick contact is amplified by carbon sticks. This game was very quiet.

Next thing I noticed was passing, the boys needed to put more behind their passes. Modern sticks require a firm grip for a redirect or at most a flick of the wrist. It was obvious Wood sticks required far more arm/forearm involvement in passing.

The boys I talked to mentioned that due to slower flexes they found it difficult to dial in accuracy on wristers. Evidence of this may come from the 6/7 crossbars the NSP team hit.

All in all it was fun game to watch. Interesting concept and frankly, when everyone is using the same twig, who cares how it plays.

Resurgence of woodies in sight? Doubt it.

Here is the recap.

There isn't much savings to be had with wood. If you are replacing them when the blades go soft, you may even spend more money on wood. I know I used to.

I completely agree with that. I remember when I was using a 2 piece with a wood blade. Went through a blade a week it seemed like and at $20-30 a pop for a good blade, it's true you don't end up saving much if anything. I must say though the woodies def had a nicer soft feel to them but, the new composite stick have come a long way in the feel department since the original Synergy.
