Elbow Pad Help

Recommended Posts

So first off, I'm new here so I'll give a quick introduction. I'm originally from Alaska, but I'm currently at school in Oregon. My sophomore year of high school I blew out my knee and am just getting back into playing 4 years later. I'm currently playing in some Adult League and it's a lot of fun, I love it. So I guess that's a quick introduction about me, and on to what I need help with.

I am a small guy, like real small; I'm about 5'6" 135 pounds (I told you, small). I got new gear recently, but the only thing I couldn't get to fit was elbow pads, the store I was at doesn't have a very big selection, and there isn't anywhere in this state that would have a better selection. My problem is that a Junior Large elbow pad fits (the straps fit and whatnot) but length-wise for my arm they aren't even close to fitting; I'm currently using some Junior Large's. The next step up (I can't find a Youth Extra Large online anywhere), Adult Small's, don't fit really. The forearm and length of the pad fit well, but the bicep area does not even come close to fitting me because my arm's are not nearly big enough. Since the bicep strap doesn't come close to fitting me, the elbow pad doesn't fit, nor is it comfortable. I'm looking for some help for a company who's adult pad might run smaller than most companies, or a company who's youth pad might run a little larger, or be offered in an Extra Large. If I can't figure something out as far as new elbows, I may just go with some slash guards to cover the gap. Thanks for any and all help!

I would pick up a pair of slash guards and use those.

I've personally tried the Bauer ones. They're a cheap fix but felt bulky around my glove cuff. I would recommend the evo shield out of all 3.

I had a similar problem with elbow pads. I am a bit smaller, 5'4" 130lbs, and I am a woman, but the Easton Stealth 85s fit me pretty well in a large. None of the other juniors I tried on were big enough, and I was swimming in the senior smalls I tried on. I think that particular model may be from last year, or the year before. Maybe worth a try, if you haven't tried them yet.

If I end up going the slash guard route I will look into these, thanks a bunch!

The fit of an elbow pad depends a lot on the shape and bulk of your forearm and elbow meaning that the obvious best way is to try on several pairs. However given your situation, the slash guards will probably be the least expensive and lowest risk solution, given that if you do end up buying online based off of recommendations on here, there's a risk element regarding fit and comfort.

However for elbow pads, I do recommend Easton Synergy models in either JR L or SR S. The Synergy line from several years ago and the ST line in particular have a premoulded forearm/elbow that seems to work amazingly well with skinnier players. I know this link is sold out, but you should be able to find them at an excellent price else where : http://redtag.totalhockey.com/product/Synergy_ST4_Elbow_Pads/itm/3196-21/

Fantastic protection even at the regular price and thus, also a good low-risk option.

I generally remove the bicep pad from my elbow pads, as my shoulder pads more than adequately cover that area. You could also shorten the strap on the bicep pad (or add extra velcro) if that is the only issue with the fit of a senior small pad.

I keep going back to my Jofa 8025 elbow pads that are close to 15 years old at this point, because of the comfort. The closest new pad would be something like the RBK 3K

I will look into those pads, thanks!

I thought about removing the bicep pad, do you find any issue with the elbow bad sliding around at all?

Actually, I find that I have fewer issues without the bicep pad. The key is to make sure you have two good straps on the forearm and that the fit is very snug. I also like the fact that my Jofas have a nylon strap and not an elastic one. The nylon doesn't stretch out.

I have a pair of brand new Adult S Bauer Supreme One80's that I ordered. I was going to return them, because I decided not to cut the bicep pad off; but by chance would you think the straps would work?

I can't recall them off the top of my head. Try them on and don't put on the bicep pad, then see how they feel to you.

I think I'm going to cut the bicep guard off. Thanks a bunch for your help!

If the rest of the pad fits well, it's probably the best solution for playing in a beer league. Especially, if you wear shoulder pads. For me, there was always a conflict between my shoulder pads and elbow pads in that area.

Yeah I agree, there is only about an inch maybe inch and a half gap between the end of the pad (without the bicep part) and my shoulder pads.

I had an older pair of Eastons that came with a forearm extension. I ended up cutting it off, kept getting caught in the cuff of my glove. They'd probably fit you....too bad I cut the extender off.

See if you can find a pair in your size, they run a little small. A medium was tight on me.

Both links have a Jr large available.

have any of you guys used lacrosse Elbows? I'm actually in the market for new elbow pads, I'm 6'1 and used to have jofa 5066 size 6 but they were a little too big for my forearms, I didn't feel like the pads really stayed with me. I found some good pairs online, but I'm now hesitant regarding the size as I don't want them to slide off, but don't want something that doesn't fit.
