Stiffening Old Skates

Recommended Posts

I have an old pair of Bauer skates with the old, all metal blades, but they're too soft compared to today's skates. Does anyone have experience with stiffening these old type skates. I was thinking of adding layers of leather inside, just to experiment, or would it be a waste of time?

Many years ago Zwickers (Bedford, MA) would stich up the ankle area and a small portion of the quarter panel that essentially stiffened up the skate. That helped to double the life of skates back when they they were mostly leather.

If you have a pair of skates with metal holders, it's time to retire them and move on. Those skates are likely just a step above a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors stiffness wise. No amount of tinkering will bring them up to even a current entry level skate's stiffness.
