Stick Flex!

Recommended Posts

Sorry to resurrect a dead post, but I've come back with results!

The Nexus in 60 flex proved to be quite spectacular, if not perfect. I've also managed to pick up a nexus in the Junior size (52 Flex?) because I found the whippyness to be quite nice, even after lobbing off about 2 inches. The blade length is the same, and I'm sitting with the Backstrom curve, so it's all good.

Now case in point - I'm the tiniest bit worried the junior stick may break. I play in a non-contact rec league, so it's all fine and dandy and I don't think there'll be much smashing up on the junior. I mean, it seems tough enough to withstand the light battering it's gonna take.

Any seniors here ever play with a junior stick?

Here's my two cents, for what it's worth.

I've contemplated using a junior stick but never ended up using it. I used a warrior dolomite intermediate 75 flex a few years back and from what I recall, I had a terrible time with it. I prefer to muscle my shots, however, so from you've written so far, I'd say you're going to be quite happy with the junior stick.

I do think that as you get stronger from playing more often, you might find the whippiness of a junior stick limiting your shot. At least, I found that to be the case with the intermediate stick when I took slapshots. I recall Chadd saying you need to slow down your shooting motion but I could never consistently do that. From all my years of lurking on this forum, I've learned that a few people have found success with whippy sticks. You just have to refine your shot to make the best of what you've got equipment-wise.

As far a breakage goes, I think you'll be fine. The stick will probably last a season if you don't go crazy hacking people's sticks or vice versa. Plus, the feel of the stick is going to change during the course of the season, so you will probably be tempted to replace it before it actually breaks.

Anway, best of luck on improving your shot as well as developing your other aspects of the game! I know I've enjoyed every frustrating moment of it when I started in my early 20's.

I would keep in mind that over time, the sticks going to feel a bit more whippy, or at least thats my experience with Compo's, unsure about the nexus in particular. in terms of durability, i never used a composite as a junior as they werent really around when i was younger, but i cant imagine they are going to be super breakable comparatively

I'm 5'8'' 240 (mostly fat) but it's still weight on the stick. I've used plenty a 50flex reebok/ZBubble stick and a 55 flex warriorand NEVER broke one. Granted my form is pretty good though and I baby my sticks. They've been slashed and hacked at and have held up over many years. Just take care of your stick and they should serve you well. Now I use 60-65 flex sticks just b/c the 50s tend to whip out much faster, even when I cut them down, than the 60-65s though.
