New Skates

Recommended Posts

I haven't gone shopping for new skates in probably 10-12 years so I'm really out of the loop when it comes to the skates I should get, and I was hoping you guys might be able to help. I currently have Bauer Vapor XII (12's), and I was hoping someone could tell me a good comparison skate that is relevant now. I play occasionally and want to play club hockey when I go to college so I wanted a decent pair of skates without spending an outrageous amount of money.. (I'm a broke college student). These are the two choices I had in mind.

Thanks in advance

I'm sorry if this sounds kind of mean, but none of those are decent skates. So is 100 $ your max price range, cause if it is I would just search eBay for skates or something like that.

If you are going to play club hockey that means you will be on the ice at least few times a week, a stiffer boot will serve you much better. Try to step up a hundred or so more and you should be good. All the shops are blowing out the old models right now. Also go in and get fitted, the old Vapors you have are not the same fit as the new Vapors I believe, plus your foot has probably changed in the last ten to 12 years.

Just go to a hockey store and try on all the skates in the 150-200$ price range, and get whichever ones fit you best, and if the worker has any clue about what he's doing he should be able to have you try on a skate or two, and know what your fit profile is like, skinny feet, wide, thick, etc.

Double check your skates to see what holders they use. Bauer/Tuuk has made a few different holders such as the custom +, lightspeed pro, lightspeed 2, etc. Once you find out the holder you need then you just need to find the corresponding runner, the one you linked is meant for lightspeed 2 holders. The length of runner you need will be imprinted on the bottom of the holder.

As mentioned before, those are very entry level skates that should probably only be bought if you're on a tight budget. I'd suggest having a look at these http://www.hockeymonkey.com/closeout-bauer-iceskates.html - Something like the x3.0, x4.0, or x5.0

To your runner question, first off I think if you are willing to pay $50 for new runners, might as well pay an extra $50 for new skates. Secondly, I'm not sure if you have the old XII or the Nike Bauer XII, might not be able to replace the runner at all. Thirdly, I see you are looking at senior skates, those are junior runners :P

Pull out the foot beds and if there's a plastic plug in the heel, they are replaceable. I unfortunately think those are not but I can not remember for certain.
