Can't decide between NXG, APX or Nexus 1000 pant

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

here's the thing. I need new pants but can't decide which model to take. It should be lightweight yet protective, with a clean and lean look.

I have medium One90s who are protective but too heavy and not long enough. And I don't like that Bauer uses 5000 different types of Nylon, Mesh and whatnot.

I also have a pair of medium + 1 Reebok 7000s who are just too bulky. Small + 1 would be perfect but they are probably too difficult and too expensive to obtain.

Considering the APX I like the "clean" look (as opposed to the Nexus) but have my reservations about the protection with the two-piece hip-guard. Also they don't come in tall sizes.

I have never worn a girdle but if the NXG is really protextive I might give it a shot. I would want to wear my legs really loose though. Being able to use different shells is a big plus.

Nexus 1000, lightweight and protective but horrible looks (ugly blue liner, gigantic spine-protector, fabric-patchwork on the outside).

The perfect pant would be the APX look with the old Totalone Interior, black and in a tall size.

So what do you think? Do you find it equally annoying to find pants or am I just too demanding?

I would say your just really picky, not demanding, and have you tried any of warriors pants? What about an eagle girdle? Why would you want to wear your legs loose on a girdle is my main question though?

Picky was the right word. Well I always like my legs loose (not too much though). Would have never thought about a girdle but since I'm so picky about the looks a girdle + shell seems to be an intersting option (though I'm totally not sold on the NXG tailbone protection). Would it work to wear a girdle with the legs loose. Read in this forum that a) the NXG shell does not allow the legs to be worn loose and b) the slim fit of the NXG might interfere with the shin pads.

Living in Germany Bauer, Reebok and CCM is pretty much all I can get (for instance not a single one of our LHS does carry any of the mentioned pants in a medium size here in our capital).

+CCM CL. Definitely the lightest of the above mention pants. Also, you may be able to find a TO pant for cheap now, and they're very protective.

+1 for Warrior too. I've heard nothing but good stuff from the AX1 protective gear and I think you should look at the DT1 pants while you're at it.

I switched from Bauer Vapor APX pants to the Total One NXG pants. The APX pants were great in all aspects except for one, which forced me to switch. The spine guard was too tall, and kept getting stuck and pushing up on the bottom of my shoulder pads up. I switched shoulder pads (APX to CCM U+CL), and was still having issues. I even tried cutting the elastic that keeps the spine guard close to your back, and that didn't work.

The NXG pants are going to be slightly tighter above the knee, even when loosened. If I keep the thigh adjustment tight, it definitely interferes with the top of my shin guard. However, when loosened a bit, it floats on top. I'm happy with the NXG pants. My only complaint is that they don't have a belt on the "girdle" itself. I solved that by wrapping a skate lace around the waist and securing them to my waist that way. The shell does have a belt, but my "girdle" was still slipping down prior to using a skate lace.

Not only are the CCM CL the lightest, but they may be the most sweat resistant, and the most durable. And yes, very protective. The only knock I have read on them is they are bulky, but these are the only pants that I have worn in 17 years (last pair I had were CCMs in 1996), and I do not remember how they felt enough to draw a comparison on bulkiness. I recall I liked those CCMs, but that's about it.

but one reads everywhere that they run short. Wouldn't want to size up to get the length but also more bulk. Apart from that I would instantly buy them.

Yea, true enough brother. I have a bit of a stocky build (compared to hockey players, who for my height, tend to run about 35 lbs smaller at my height), with some Football Player Halfback thighs and buttocks, so CCM suits me well enough. I am interested to see though, how your investigation pans out. I almost went with the NXG girdle, but shied away from it because I understand that girdles tend to be less durable than true pants. (and as I am in a remote location, far, far away from LHS, I need to get the most durable everything). But from what I understand, the protection in those is top notch. I have the NXG shins, and they are tanks (which fit beautifully), and it looks like similar materials in the pants.

Being in Europe I would think Tackla would be an option they are a European fit pant (tighter in the waist and looser in the legs) available in long sizes. Plus I always thought they had a pretty clean look, and it is hard to beat the protection on 9000 Airs.

Also if you like the Nexus 1000 minus the look you could get those and just wear a non-padded nylon shell for the clean look you like. Just a thought.

thanks everyone for your opinions and suggestions so far!

@scompl great description. I would rather see Bauer producing straight pant backsides instead of addind those enormous spinal protectors (Nexus seem to be gigantic). However my main issue with those is that my jersey gets stuck in them. Even thought about adding a "fight strap" in order to keep it down. CCM U+ CL Shoulder are definitely on my wish list.

@cosmic similar build here. Durability is a good point. Have always preferred clean, simple and well built products (e.g. IBM Thinkpads). Point against a girdle.

@ID Rollerpop Tacklas are very hard to get by here. It's much easier for you on Ebay. There was a decent priced pair of old black 5000s in my size where the lowers are attached with a zipper. Finally decided against them because they are probably much heavier than I would prefer. Actually have really been interested in lightweight gear lately because I do play better without equipment.

Got a Tackla shell recently :) However wearing shells over pants isn't too beneficial for the ventilation unfortunately.

Wait if you don't like your jersey getting stuck in them, why don't you just tuck in a corner of your jersey? I never tucked it in before but I did this year and loved it.

Got pants. A used pair of Totalones on Ebay which I will be wearing with a Tackla shell. Just couldn't buy anything in a store because I don't want Bauer to generate profit from me when they can't provide me with gear that I like (decent looking, no exaggerated spine protector, etc.) I would buy their Pro-Stock stuff however.
