stick lie

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if I am using the right lie. I use the Bauer pm9 with a lie of 5. I tend to skate more upright. I cut the stick down to tip of nose height. What did that do to the lie? I am trying to find the right stick for my style. Should I consider a higher lie. I play forward. I am a shorter player who likes to move the puck up the ice and set up plays. I know alot of this is personal preference. Any suggestions would be great!!

my way of thinking of it is when youre playing is the blade flat? if it isnt, its 90% of the time getting dragged on the heel. you can either get a new stick with another lie to fit your style. or keep your stick a length that works.

For me if i was on skates and the stick was cut to the tip of my nose i would be having a lot of trouble bc that stick is way too long for me. i usually cut mine to the top of my shoulders or a little below my chin. for reference im 5' 7" with no footwear on and my stick is 54-55" from the butt end to the back of the heel (not the stick standing on the toe)

The more you chop off the stick, the closer the blade gets to you - this means the toe will touch the ground more and the heel will lift more off the ground.

Best way to find out if the lie is right for you is to put new tape on your blade then go for a skate / puck handle / shoot some pucks. After a few minutes have a look at the bottom of the blade and see where the wear is occurring. Heel wear means you need a lower lie or a shorter stick, vice versa for toe wear. Ideally the wear should be in the middle of the blade but this is just a general guide, lie and stick length are all a personal preference and some players like a heel bias and some a toe bias. Also forwards generally play with shorter sticks for better control of the puck whilst d's play with longer sticks for poke checking and reach. Some nhl forwards have a stick length that only comes up to the top of their chest, it's all personal preference.

Also the more you skate and practice, the lower in stance you will get.
