Best Inline Skates for Ice Hockey (it's all about the toe)

Recommended Posts

A few months ago, I got a pair of Bauer Supreme One.9 LEs. Everything was all well and good, but then I got this bump at physio, and my left foot is just not happy in the boot. My right foot is very happy, just a bunch of twisted ankles in the left foot and some odd stuff as a result, and my left foot just does not like the One.9 LE. I have loaded the boot up with all these gel caps, but doubt this will help much. Whether I am skating or standing, the ball of my left toe just hurts. If I sit then it is fine, but I do not play ice hockey sitting. I know, I could bake, and may end up doing so- we will see. I do not have a bake oven, and if I bake, then I will need to take all these gel pads out that are lining the tongue, and that may mess up the felt. So, anyway, on to my question(s) ...

Is there an inline skate that has a robust enough toe to use for ice hockey? I have the Skate Fenders, so the weak protection of an inline boot on its instep/ ankle will not be an issue, and I tuck the tongue under the shin, so that too will give me plenty of protection on the metatarsal. The biggest concern is just the toe. If I take a slap shot to my toe (which I will try NOT to do), then I do not want to be skating off with shattered toe caps again. Is there an inline boot toe that is pretty strong?

I should add, I just received a pair of Mission Axiom T10s, and love them. Both of my feet feel awesome in them, and very happy. It is like standing in pillows. I want to swap out my wheels for steel and use these for ice hockey, but then I will have no inline skates. And of course, I am not sure of these toes- will they be able to withstand the impact of an ice hockey puck?

I wear size 10.0 EE in both of these skates. I have a medium arch. My left foot is bigger than the right; it is fathomable that a 10.5 EE for the left skate for the One.9's might be what I need, and then I will be all good. I will try this on next time I am in an LHS.

The toe cap on the T10's is a Bauer toe cap so it should be fine. I converted my T9's to ice and I have no problems with durability in the toe or otherwise. It's a fantastic boot.

Gotcha, yea I looked everywhere for another pair of T10s or T9s in my size, but they look like they are all sold out. I might have to just buy the Inhalers, which will be just as well I suppose. Any tips on the conversion process (the drilling specifially)? It looks like my Tuuks line up perfectly with the T10s, except there is an extra drill hole (x2 for Left/Right for each boot)) in front and back.

The conversion was easy, I just lined it up like I do any other holder (I work at a pro shop). If I remember correctly there was only one hole that I had to drill that was close to a hole from the chassis.

Lucky you. Yea there is no LHS out here. I have a nice design tech lab where I work which will have vices and drills and things, which ought to do well for the job, but the guys who work in that department nothing of hockey/ hockey gear, so the nuances of getting this job done will likely be missed (to no fault of their own other than not being hockey enthusiasts).I know nothing of these nuances too, I just enjoy playing hockey and am not handy yet. These endeavors are increasing my handiness though, I must say.
