Can anything be done to adjust boot depth?

Recommended Posts

I bought a pair of Reeboks online for my 12 year old son. Usually I like to make skate purchases in person to get a proper fit. In this case I found an outstanding deal on the exact pair he had but on size up since his current ones were too small.

They seemed to be OK when he got them in the summer. After a few weeks his left foot seemed to be bulging out past the laces. Eventually the right as well. It was to the point where the only way he could wear the skates was to take the footbed out completely.

Now it is to the point where he says they feel terrible. The length and width still seem fine, it is the depth. I wish I could just go an buy him a new pair of skates, but money at this time is pretty tight for us. Is there any typeof stretching that can be done to increase a boot's depth? It seems to me that there would be no way, but I thought I would ask just in case.

If we do have to get new skates, is there any particular brand/model that is wide like RBK but has more depth in the boot?

Thanks in advance!

Find a shop that can punch the heels straight back. Adds a little length but will let his foot sit back in the boot further. Could help a little bit.

Thanks - I will give that a try.

I did the same thing with reeboks, I was told they were the widest boot available so I went with them. Unfortunately no one told me their boot depth is nearly nothing. They were cool for a month but after that I started feeling it and I hated them. I now have missions ac:2s (bauer supreme fit) and it's way better.

With the reeboks to compensate I tried different lacing which helped a little as well as just barely tying the bottom half near the bulgeof my foot. These helped but didn't fix it in the long run. IMHO themis as well as other issues will keep me away from Reebok for a long long time.

If you can't afford another pair of boots but the they still fit him everywhere but the depth then try a different lacing pattern:

1: Assuming the bulge is the top of the foot, lace up to the 4th eyelet, tie off with a double knot, feed the lace down and under a cross over lace (2 eyelets down) then up to the top and tie off as normal. This means you miss lacing 3 eyelets of the top area of the foot yet still get support around the ankles with lots of forward flex. I've been skating like this for the past 6 months and find it works really well, it addressed the volume issues I had with my Graf skates. Note - the double knot gets really tight so I put a piece of old lace int the middle of it so I can pull it out at the end and still get the knot undone.

Experiment with different lacing patterns, plenty out there on the web and also remember that a lot of players train and skate with the top 2 eyelets undone.

2: Alternatively look at some option b velcro laces. Yep, your son will most probably hate them as they are uncool but they do address any lace bite issues and if it means he can keep wearing the skates until you can afford something else then they are a cheap fix.
