Strange Penalty calls last night

Recommended Posts

I was at a London Knights OHL game last night and saw a call I had never seen before. One of the Knights players was going in on a breakaway when he was hauled down from behind and slid into the goalie. A crowd ensued and when the dust settled the Knights player was in the penalty box for goaltender interference. The ref then pulled him out of the penalty box to take the penalty shot he was awarded. He was then sent back to the box to serve his penalty. He was in no way in enough control after being tripped from behind to avoid the goalie so I have no idea how he got the interference penalty. I just found it a very odd combination of calls.

I've made a call like that before. The guy grabbed the goalie after he made contact and wouldn't let him get in position for the rebound opportunity. I didn't see the play last night, so I have no idea what exactly happened in that case.

if this is the game Rupert probably did something after or when he was falling to warrant the penalty. That must have been a wild one!

From my point of view all he did was tuck his head and slide into the goalie. Perhaps I missed something but the reffing was so bad in the first period that I doubt it.

On a side note, i've been shopping for some cut proof socks after seeing so many guys go down with skate cuts to the back of the leg lately. After watching the Knights goalie leave on a stretcher from a skate cut, it really reinforced my decision to buy a pair.

If you wear full-leg length base layer, I've been wearing these (http://www.bodyarmour.ca/sports/hockey/bodyarmour-cut-resistant-pant-kevlar.aspx) for about six months and love them.

If you want something with even more protection for the back of the leg there are these (http://www.hoganhockey.com/products/34). Those probably would have helped Stolarz immensely.

You didn't miss anything.

The forward has the responsibility to avoid the goalie when he is in the vicinity of the crease and making a play on the puck. Tucking and sliding into the goalie, if in the opinion of the referee it was avoidable, is an easy call. And yes, the player does take the penalty shot before serving his penalty. Unless he gets a game misconduct, then another player on the ice at that time takes the penalty shot.
