Stick flex inconsistency

Recommended Posts

I'm growing a bit frustrated with the inconsistency in stick flex from the same manufacturer from model to model. Now this is understandable if you're changing lines i.e. mako to v9e....but the same product lines should have 'close' to the same flex profiles I would hope.

I purchased a Mako2 85 flex recently and I was quite happy with the flex, the stick broke during the warranty period they sent me an 85 flex v9. I was initially excited but upon using the v9 I noticed it was much stiffer than the mako2. I was prepared for a stiffer blade but the shaft flex is also noticeably stiffer.

Its a bit frustrating to have to experiment with flex profiles from model to model with how expensive these sticks are. I've been using Easton for a long time and this isn't the first time this has happened. I used to use an 85 flex stealth way back with the original stealth model, when the s17/s19 model lines came out I needed to jump up to a 100 flex. Then moving from an s19 to an rs2 I needed to jump back down to an 85 flex. As I mentioned the 85 flex with the mako2 was great but now with the v9 even the 85 flex is a bit stiff, that's coming from a guy that's 6'5" 225 who puts a 4" plug in his stick. Now i'm going to need to potentially look into going with a v9e 85 flex I guess. I get that its hard to be perfectly consistent but the change from the mako2 85 flex to the v9 85 flex is really considerable.

To the point...i'm essentially married to the iginla curve which is why I still use Easton. I've used an APX, Nexus, ribcor and TO NXG and the only two I liked were the ribcor and APX but I couldn't get used to the darn curve. When I used the APX I liked it but the 87 flex was a bit too whippy...I'm thinking about ordering an p12 on mybauer in the APX2 but I wanted some input on the flex change from the APX to the APX2. If they're very similar I'll go with a 95 flex in the APX2, if anyone thinks the APX2 is slightly stiffer than the original i'm going to want an 87 flex.

Thanks all sorry for the long-winded email for a simple question.

No surprise here. When the V-Series sticks were released the V9 was meant to play stiffer than the Mako2 and the V9E to be softer than the RS2. So if you jump from the Mako2 to the V9 and then the V9E, you might think that the V9E plays way too whippy for you.

I've used a Stamkos and a Kane. I believe those are p9 and p88?

Okay just wanted to make sure you used the stamkos because thats what I think is bauers version of the iginla. And keep in mind flex profiles. When they say sticks are "easy to load" well...its exactly that. The V9's kickpoint is a little lower than the mako's mid kick point and personally if a stick flexes where I put my hand(the middle) I find it easier to flex

I'm not sure that's true. Being tall with a longer stick i've noticed lower kick points tend to feel "whippier" for me than midkick.

true...you also have literally 11 inches on me since I'm 5'6"...so we are polar opposites in that area

Well, the v9 broke after like my fourth use in men's league. No slappers, no one timers, very very limited stick play. Thing just snapped in half....

Never buying Easton again, this is ridiculous.

Bauer's version of the Iginla is the P12 which is only available thru the MyBauer program. The Stamkos is Bauer's answer for the Modano/Forsberg/Zetterberg/whatever it is called now.

Yeah i've tried the Stamkos, the lie/rocker made the way it played just too weird for me. I've wanted to order a P12 for quite some time on MyBauer but the $259 + shipping with a 4-6 lead time has kept me away.

Same thing happened to V9E. Two skates in. But I can't simply blame Easton, I'm going for another V9E. Anyone else have durability issues with their V-series?

The times that I have used MyBauer the wait time has been closer to 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. The last time I did it was a Total One and the price was like $30 less than now.

To be fair, I contacted Easton and complained that their warranty stick broke so fast and they've offered to send another replacement. We'll see how long the replacement lasts.

I really liked how the the 85 flex in the V9E was whippier than the previous gen RS2. Can someone recommend another stick that plays the same as the V9E in terms of flex? I'm open to all suggestions regardless of kick point and other attributes. Also, how does the 87 flex Nexus 1000 compare to the V9E in terms of flex and whippy-ness. ?
