new skates or replace holders and runners

Recommended Posts

I'm currently skating on a pair of 25 year-old super tacks and I love the way they fit but the blades are almost gone and lately I have some pretty bad pain on the bottom of my feet after skating for about 10 minutes. It hurts pretty bad but after finishing a 2 hour skate they don't hurt anymore. It could be because i'm just getting back on the ice after an 8 years but I'm not sure. I skate about 6 hours a week so I thought after a few weeks the pain would go away but it hasn't. So does it sound like time for new skates? If so do you guys have any recommendations? I've always skated in tacks so something that fits like a tack is something I'd be looking for. My other option is to keep the boot and replace the holders and steel. Any thoughts or recommendations on this would be great

If you decide on new skates, Do not get rid of your old ones! I had a pair of Micron Mega 10-90's that I wore for over 15 years. Those things were like an extension of my feet and I could fly on them. The holders finally cracked and the runners were pretty low along with some cosmetic wear on the boots, so I decided to get with the times and buy some new skates, at which time I chucked my Megas in the garbage. That was about 10 years ago and I still regret it. The new tech skates are much stiffer, (even at the low end of the spectrum) and you may never adjust. Not saying you won't be happy with new skates, but hang onto your old ones just in case.
