Shipping from US and CA

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I started to think 'bout buying staff from states and canada.

Ive noticed that used gear is far more superior at price and condition that here in Finland.

Has anyone of you shipped stuff to finland (or even to europe)?

How much it was for that?

*oh crap, posted this to wrong section, moderators, please move this topic*

What's the import limit to Finland Euro wise? In the end what might be cheaper from here or Canada still might end up costing you a bit in VAT. I spent 5 weeks in Finland and didn't come across any hockey shops during my travels there....

I have ordered a fair bit over the years from the states and Canada so have some experience. If its new items you will have problems getting some makes of stuff such as Bauer as they are not allowed to ship outside the region they are being sold in. Basically a few years back no one in europe was buying from europe due to how cheap everything was in the USA. Another issue was import duty, again a few years back I would have to pay import duty on may be 1/5 parcels and the rest just went straight through with no charge now I will be paying import duty on 9/10 so that made buying from the states far less appealing. Shipping for something like skates etc has always been around $80-100 and I would get them within about a week..

Now used gear is a bit different, expect to pay the same for shipping unless its a big and or bulky/heavy item and I would make sure that the value added to the parcel is very low and that it is marked as "gift" this will mean zero import duty will be due and no other charges put on at your end. I have no Idea how Finland does things but that is how they do it in the UK.

So to round it up the shipping cost was not really a issue for me if what I was getting is a really good deal, the bit that made it a waste of time was the import fee's on new items but as stated this can be navigated around if you purchase used and state low value and gift on the parcel.

Finnish VAT free import limit is 22 Euros. Marking an item as a gift, used, etc. doesn't make a difference, you still have to pay 24% VAT if the value is over it. Remember that the value is calculated from the total cost of the item, including shipping. For example $30 item + $10 shipping = $9,6 tax = total cost $49,6. Some parcels MAY slip through the customs, but never, ever count on that, always be prepared to pay the import fees. They have a right to ask you for documents to prove the value, usually either a PayPal receipt or a credit card statement. Trying to fool them and getting caught gets you a fine.

If the total value exceeds around 150 Euros you also have to pay duty, which is something between 2-3% on hockey equipment.

Also, as said before, shops aren't allowed to ship most (retail) gear outside US because of the manufacturer's shipping restrictions. Pro stock/return stuff is a different story, and that's what Ebay is for.

PM me if you have questions. Been buying quite a lot of stuff from US / Canada in the last few years.
