Trying on Pants

Beginner question here.

What do I wear if I'm going to my local retailer to try on hockey pants?

Is it a bad idea to try them on over jeans? Sweatpants?

Hockey monkey has a change room so I just put the pants over underwear (which is the same fabric as my jock shorts anyway)

Don't do it over jeans. You'll end up buying one size too large.
