Pro-Stock skate purchase advice needed

Recommended Posts

I am looking at possibly bidding on a very lightly used pair of pro-stock ccm tacks skates on ebay from a reputable dealer. the outsole is stickered with the name of the player they were made for and the sizing, which matches the size i am looking for in this exact skate.

i have two questions:

1. is it safe to bake these once i get them not knowing how many times they were baked for the nhl player who used them prior? they appear to be in almost brand new condition.

2. is there any reason to believe they won't fit the same as a regular store bought pair of tacks in the same size?

just trying to weigh the risk that i buy them and they don't end up working out for me....

thanks!

To answers both questions,

1. It's safe to bake the skates. Make sure you monitor how long they're baking for and try to not over bake them - especially because you don't know if they were baked prior, and if so, how many times.

2. Pro-stock skates can greatly differ than the retail version of the same model of skate. Not only can one skate size differ than the other, but some players customize the tongues, footbeds, holders, runners, amount of eyelets or positioning of them, and the overall composition/characteristics of the boot itself.

Personally, I have a set of pro-stock Bauer APX skates. Mine were collegiate level pro-stocks, so the amount of modifications may not be as high as someone in the NHL. Regardless, they don't appear to have any modifications that make them all that different than a retail level skate. While this is the case for me, that's the not the case for all models. Personally, I wouldn't consider a set of pro-stock skates without trying them on. You never know what you're buying when it's custom ordered for someone that's not yourself. I hope this helped some.

the photos of the skates are pretty thorough (numerous close-ups and different angles) , so i'm very confident the skates are what they appear to be. comparing them to stock photos of the retail version, i can't see ANY differences, so i think i'm going to give it a shot.
