Skate Modification for Burn Victim

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I've been working on modifying a skate for a customer of mine for a few weeks now and am looking to see if anyone has any suggestions.

A little backstory - my customer was involved in a car accident a few years ago and suffered severe burns over 75% of his body. He isn't looking to actually play hockey - just get out on the ice and be able to skate around with his young kids. The problem is, due to the extent of his injuries, and the type of reconstructive surgery he had, he can no longer roll or maneuver his right ankle - which makes trying to balance on a skate blade pretty hard.

I put him in a pair of CCM Tacks because those fit his feet the best. Once we heat-molded them, they really wrapped well around his ankle and given the stiffness of the boot, he and I are no longer worried about any sort of movement or lack of support. In addition to that, my CCM rep sent me some extra padding to soften up everything around his ankles and that has worked very well.

Onto the fun part...My plan involves removing the holder and blade on his right boot and replacing it with a modified holder and a set of bob-skates (the dual blades). I've been using a mix of plastic shims and fiberglass coatings to level out the base of the boot and to match the height of the holder and runner on the left skate prior to mounting the blades.

Things are moving along well, but I'm always open to seeing if anyone out there has any recommendations I could use to get this guy back out on the ice. I can attach pictures, and if anyone needs any more information to better make a recommendation , I'll be happy to answer.

Thanks!

Maybe he will need a very long radius, like a goalie radius, for the right skate's blades.

I've seen this product called Skateez at my local Canadian Tire store.  They advertise themselves as an alternative to bob skates and 'training wheels for skates'.  Looks like they are made for youth and junior sized skates only though.

If he is going to skate with a knee bend he might need to have a lot of forward pitch (if he can't flex the ankle).

Thanks for this!

I won't be able to use these exactly, but it gave me an idea with regards to the bob-skates I'm attaching to his boots. Initially, I was just going to line three of them up in a row down the middle of his boot, but that gave me the idea to double them up and put two side-by-side at the ball of the foot and two at the heel to basically achieve that same goal.

Thanks!
