Youth Skates - Stiffness

Recommended Posts

Looking to purchase new skates for my son - 10 years old - about 75lbs - decent skater - borderline house/rep player.

He has worn the Vapor x60s for the last few years, and has had good success with them.  Fit is good, no complaints whatsoever.   I have the opportunity to get him the x100s (2014) for a super price.   My question is, is there such a thing as a skate being "too much skate" or too stiff for a given person?  Will there be any negative putting him in this skate, compared to the skate he has been in?

Thanks!

To answer shortly, yes.

But according to my own sense, I want to say it's not such big problem as people thinking. One of a fact for that, all of skate boots have been changing to stiffer. It has been continuing still now. Currently we can see VH skates and many of people who would be happy with it. They say that VH is most comfortable. At least I don't feel any pain. And VH trust themselves that their stiffer boots will also make happy many junior players so they started to provide special low price for children.

I've been thinking that skate boots are better as stiff as possible. Maybe it needs little different contouring/profile but I think it will be able to be used without bad points. Generally it is said that we should put softer boots for children than heavier or powerful adult players, but I've never seen any monograph which back up the opinion.

But boots stiffness problem is according to one's sense. Even if my writing is correct theoretically, there is no value if your son doesn't feel so or feel problem by the too much stiffness. In the sports, sense is more important than theory.

Re-State, yes, you can put your kid in skates that are too stiff.  Yes, Adults can get into skates that are too stiff.  I'm in the camp, a little less stiff for the pups.  Meaning, if you are between skates, the lower is a safer bet.  I think kids rarely breakdown their skates, usually growing out of them before they start breaking down.

My younger skater('05 5' 100lbs) is a very good skater, been playing travel hockey for 3 years(Plays for 10U, 12U and 14U teams this year and heading to the ChiTown Shuffle in 2 weeks) and wears CCM 290's and I wondered about that vs 280's.

I don't have any idea re: those skates or your kid and how he/she would manage with that boot, I just feel a skate that is too stiff will hold a kid back.  I wouldn't make a huge jump on stiffness on a pup ever.  (Again, no idea if that's a jump, haven't looked)

Take it for what it's worth, I'm no expert.
