Bauer x90 vs x800

Recommended Posts

Hello and thanks in advance.

I am a beginner to intermediate level player.

I am looking for new skates. I can get a nice pair of new x90 online for about 400 US$.  Or I can break my bank and go for the x800 for 550 US$ At my local shop.

I honestly would prefer refer to save the money but think from a pure skate point of view - what do y'all recommend.

I started 5 yrs ago w a vapor VII USED and retrospectively like them. I got a deal on new stealth RS and have been disappointed.  Feel like I am carrying baggage and the skate is not behaving.

I I understand the x90 has more tech mesh which may actually benefit me. Not sure how the stiffness affects beginners.

I play two games a week and usually one stick time.  I want to play more but it is what it is.

Any my and all advice comments and recs appreciates.

x90 is a basically top of the line skate with a tech mesh quarter.

x800 is a curve composite quarter with TPU outsole.

A lot of NHLers use skates similar to the x90 (doughty, stamkos, toews, a bunch of others) its certainly not holding them back any and plenty stiff even for NHL level.

The curve composite will be stiffer. Will you notice the difference? Will the stiffness be a benefit or hold you back? Who knows, maybe. I have no idea of your skill or fitness level. If you're playing at a beginner level both of these skates might be total overkill.

If the vapors were your first skates you should go out and see what other skates feel like, see what else is out there and you may find a pair that fit you better.

If the Vapor boot fits you best, I also recommend the X90. Lots of good features at that price point. Mine served me well for over a year and the boot is still plenty stiff.

Get the 90s!  I had them and u fortunately they suffered a crack in the quarter due to a couple slap shots.  Bauer sent me the x900s as the equivalent replacement skate.  they didn't work for me because (long story short) there were less eyelets even in the same size skate which lead to lace bite.  I had also considered the 800 as a replacement but tbe major difference in the 800 was the tongue.  Tbe 800 has a high density foam metatarsal guard.  The 900 and the x90 have a hard plastic piece as a metatarsal protection.  The 900 I believe is curv composite.  The x90 wasn't but it was still harder and better lace bite protection than the 800.

Bottom line is that In my book the 90 is a better skate than the 800.  They will have the same steel/runner, but the construction of 90 is different.  The tech mesh is solid and stiff, but not as stiff as the 800/900 boots which is the curve composite.

Id recommend trying them on.  But if you're trying to save money and want a high end skate the 90 is a great buy.
