Step Steel vs Hyperglide

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm was planning on grabbing another set of HyperGlide runners for my Tacks, but have been reading a lot of good things about the StepSteel runners and was thinking of grabbing a pair of them instead, but had a few questions First how does the radius of the the Step compared to the Hyperglides? Second, how noticeable is the difference between Steps V-Steel and the standard runners? I can get the regular Steps for $45 from hockey giant, monkey has V-steel, but they're $90. Or should I just stick with the Hyperglides, which I've been happy with. Any suggestions will be appreciated

IMO Step is a much harder steel and will hold it's edge way better than the Hyperglide. In my experience I would spend the extra money on the Step Blacksteel over the V-steel. The V-steel is a touch better than the regular but not worth the price difference you mention, however I feel the Blacksteel version is. The Blacksteel version is not the same as the Hyperglide as the Step version actually has a DLC coating where the CCM version does not. The DLC coating helps edge retention and you don't have to sharpen as often, great steel!

I don't have Step Steel to compare with (yet), but one annoying thing about Hyperglide is that there are sidewall inconsistencies that throw off both my edge checkers. I also find even brand new Hyperglide runners to be fairly short - I haven't measured the height of the steel exposed below the holder, but visually it's seems a good bit shorter than LS3 for example - I would assume the Step Steel for SB4.0 holders would be taller as well.

I have a pair of Step Steel for SB4.0 holders (to replace Hyperglide runners) on order and will let you know my thoughts once I get them.
