How much of a bend in the skate blade should I be concerned about?

Recommended Posts

So I had my skates shimmed there's a very tiny bend on the blade afterward. If I take a straight edge and measure from heel to toe, I can see maybe one millimeter or less's worth of space where I can see the white of holder. However, the bend is so tiny that if I measure from heel to center or toe to center, it's nearly gapless. I'm pretty sure that it comes from the holder because I'm basically eyeballing it and measuring with the straight edge at the very top of the runner where it goes into the holder. Is that to the difference miniscule to the point that I shouldn't worry about it unless it actually affects my skating or should I get this straightened out in case?

Howdy,

I'd be mostly just worried about whether or not it would sharpen correctly.  As long as the skate holder clamped it straight and you got good edges, I bet I'd never notice it at all on the ice.

Very much NOT an expert though... :-)

The biggest issue is sharpening if the bend is big enough and can't be straightened when clamped in the holder. Otherwise you have to remember that only a small portion of the blade is in contact with the ice when you skate so a minor bend front to rear is acceptable. But if it slants in the holder then that can cause edge and balance control issues.
