Need help choosing pants and pads

Recommended Posts

I'm about to come to the US from the UK and plan on buying my hockey equipement, we dont have much choice in UK shops, so i'll be a kid in a candy store once I get there.

I'm thinking about Bauer 8000, Nike Quest1 or Easton Synergy pants, obviously fit will be the biggest factor but I just wondered if anyone had any experience or comments they could share. Alternatively if someone feels strongly about a different pant then please let me know. Thanks

As for the shoulder pads, I was looking at Easton Synergy, Bauer 8000 litespeed or some Jofa pads.

Again, comments would be greatly appreciated.

Pittsburgh, but I was thinking of mail order so as to avoid PA sales tax, unless of course there's not much difference between the shop and somewhere like hockeymonkey.

the shipping you pay will be more than the PA state sales tax. I would try on a number of models and see what fits you best. Perani's in Pittsburgh has a nice little shop. Cupolo sports is another option but they aren't my favorite place in Pitt for many reasons. The pro shops in the rinks I've been to out there weren't very impressive but I've only been to 4 or 5 of them.

Well it doesn't look like money is that much of a factor to you judging by the equipment models that you listed but you might want to try on the Nike V-10 shoulder pads to compare against the others. I personally think the V-10 line is the best bang-for-buck protective equipment on the market today. They're quite light and mobile and offer good protection. They might not be a top choice though if you play in a high-level league with full body contact.

For pants I would recommend a high end Tackla. They're the best pants IMO but you definately pay for them as they're quite expensive (probably on par though with those pants that you listed).

We've had a lot of customers that have chosen teh Fury over some others. Very similar to the Tackla, similar in cost too. We're selling them for $135.

Wow. That's quite an aggressive pricing strategy by Fury as Tackla is a much more well-known name brand then they are in the Pants category.

The top end pants are supposedly made in the same factory, I have no proof one way or the other. The features are very nice and they have all of the high end stuff you would expect.

They have offshore models coming next year at lower price points. For now, it's all similar to what Primeau wears, if not exactly the same.

Off topic, but how's the fury stick?

Not too bad. PM Theo, he bought one a couple weeks ago.

I have the Bauer 8000 pants and have had the Quest 1 in the past. The 8000 is like an updated/improved Quest 1 pant. Very very similar in many points and in fit. Overall I do not have one bad thing to say about the 8000s, really great pants.

As for the pads, you should seriously look into the Nike stuff. I know it's fugly, but the pads work really great, both in fit/mobility and in protection. I have tried the Synergy shoulders and I didn't like them a bit. They were especially narrow around the neck which really turned me off. And the shoulder caps are (too) massive.
