Daughter's 1st college visit

Recommended Posts

My daughter is 16 and she's a high school junior; she plays for a girls' 19U club team in Washington D.C. Yesterday we scheduled her first visit to meet with the women's ice hockey coach at Providence College next month.

This is a big moment for her because it's the first D-1 school to really show interest in offering her a scholarship. Providence plays in the Hockey East conference (others in the conference include UNH, Maine, UConn, BC and Northeastern) and is currently ranked #10 in the nation. The Providence coach saw her play in a tournament over Thanksgiving and told her club team coach he was impressed.

This is still an unofficial visit (we have to pay the travel cost) because NCAA rules don't allow colleges to pay for a campus visit until senior year of high school. They can have only limited contact with players until they've completed their junior year and they can't make a scholarship offer until she's a senior. Still this is a big deal to her and she's really excited.

We're going to meet with the coach, attend a team practice and tour the campus; the next day we're going to watch them play Maine.

Congratulations to you and your daughter! That's a great start to a furthering her hockey future, and most importantly getting an education! Not to mention Providence isn't too shabby in either category. Next fall will be extremely important for her future, both academically and on the ice.

Good luck, and keep us updated on the progress.

Thx. I'm pretty excited for her, as you can tell.

It doesn't mean Providence is going to offer her a scholarship or anything, but it's pretty cool to see her getting close to something she's worked really hard to achieve. She told me when she was 10 years old she was going to go for a D-1 scholarship, and now she's almost there.

If she keeps working hard, she'll get it. Now we just have to figure out how to get her suited up for our team.

Psst...psst.

BU is joining Hockey East's women's conference. New D-1 team is starting next year and will play out of walter brown arena.

Congrats, though. If she gets the scholarsihp that's a massive burden off your shoulders. No school is really worth 40k/year.

The irony there is, a lot of the top D-1 colleges in women's ice hockey are the Ivy League schools, and although they give financial aid they don't give athletic scholarships, so if you have a daughter who plays hockey with excellent grades, she could end up at Harvard or Dartmouth or Brown or Princeton, and not get much help financially.

Congrats to you and your daughter! you should be really proud. I'm not too familiar with the whole A,AA,AAA, D-1 ranking thing. The only thing in Singapore that parents are worried about is the school's ranking in terms of acedemic performance. Only one school in Singapore (out of the thousands!) has inline hockey as an activity. Ice hockey doesnt exist in the school systems.
