illpaseo116 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2005 Anyone ever have a problem with pucks shattering?? I'm referring to the IDS, CCM, mission, etc. In all my years of hockey i had only seen one break, and now me and my friends have broken literally 5 pucks in the last 2 weeks. At $7 a pop its startin to get frustrating. It's like as soon as you ring a post the puck is finished...ps- i thought maybe it was a bad batch b/c 3 of them were ccm's i got at the same time/place, but the other two were an IDS and then a franklin
MDE3 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2005 Indoors or outdoors?..Meaning are you playing in cold weather? I have seen them shatter like that when they get cold.
illpaseo116 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2005 yeah outdoors, and the weather was the first thing i thought of too. However its been happening on warmer nights, like in the 50's. we usually play outdoors year-round, down into the 30's and didn't have pucks breaking, so i dunno whats goin on
mik3 1 Report post Posted January 13, 2005 The problem might be the fact they're going from the 30 degree weather, to 50. The weather change like that isn't good with plastic and can weaken it a lot.
Shorthanded67 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2005 Geeze, I don't even get to the point where the pegs wear down...usually the pucks end up lost before that... :P We had an outdoor rink here for a while. It was "indoor" with a cover from the elements, but it was an open-air rink around the sides. Usually the season would end in November but I remember some sub-20 degree temps. It would take a period just to warm up and get the blood flowing. And when the puck hit the post, it was pretty well done for. 5 pucks in one game I remember one cold evening....They have since fully covered the rink on all sides. Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2005 We don't get extremes anything like that in Aus but I have seen pucks shatter just from wear and tear. Usually when someone rips a nice slapper and it hits the post. I have seen a puck shatter in a game when it hit the post. Half went in the net and half flew off to the side. The refs counted it and needless to say the goalie was well and truely pissed off! ;)It was an IDS puck with some hollow sections in the middle. i havn't seen too many of the Sonic pucks break. We use them mostly for training.PS: $7 a puck is cheap as! We have to pay $25-$50 EACH in Aus!!!
Sghockey21 1 Report post Posted January 15, 2005 How about using the Millenium ProPuck. They are made of the same vulcanized rubber as ice pucks (durable) and I love it for the weight and feel. The pegs on my puck has started to wear thin though.Aussie Joe...our pucks are about $10 here in Singapore..you could come down (up?) here and get some! MDE3 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2005 Are you sure (original poster) you did not get a supply of "shock" pucks....these were notorious for shattering, although they seemed to settle a little better in play (not bounce or roll so much)

Don't bother using the Millenium pucks as they are different weight and feel wise to the pucks we use in games. I end up shooting astray trying to compromise for the extra weight which isn't there during games. Y'know its funny I was in Singapore in early July on my way to Germany and had I known you guys had hockey there I would have bought some stuff! Ah well. Such is life I guess. PS: You guys have Milo with Ice at Maccas! Man that tripped me out! Not a bad idea though. ;)
Steve 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2005 Use Mach pucks.
illpaseo116 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2005 no, they weren't shock pucks, they were 3 ccm's, 1 IDS, and a franklin.and on the milleniums, i can't stand those pucks, and we don't use those in the leagues so i try not to practice with those unless i have nothing else
