Well usually when you buy from an online store, you have to pay customs fees. However, if someone sends something to you and they mark it off as a gift on the declaration, then it's should be fine under $60cdn value I believe.

Hey CobrAA,

You probably got hit with brokerage fees. Companies charge them for the preparation of the final entry document that gets your shipment across the border. UPS' brokerage fee is huge; I seem to remember FedEx's being a bit better. If you can, get items shipped from the USA via USPS (United States Postal Service). I've had many items sent via USPS, and never paid brokerage (standard disclaimer -- your mileage may vary).

Another thing to look for when buying from the USA is the country of origin of the product. Was it made in Canada? Was it made in the USA or Mexico? If not, CBSA (Canadian Border Services Agency) will likely charge you duties as well. There may even be duties for stuff made in the other NAFTA countries, but I doubt these duties apply to hockey equipment. It's all here; it's not light or exciting reading, but hey, forewarned is forearmed.

$18.92 brokerage fee for a stick to come from the US to Canada. Would only take cash or credit card.

Welcome to the world of international commerce. Every country wants a piece.

If you get anything shipped to you via UPS, they should send a tube of lube in advance. The rates are horrible with UPS. Fedex is the best.

When I send to Canada I always use USPS. FedEx isn't bad either, UPS is almost a guarentee that your buyer is going to get nailed with fees.

I've only encountered 1 problem, it was with a member on the board using (UPS I believe) and the charges were either $30 or $50 on a pair of used Sande 720's.
