First time playing goalie...tips?

Recommended Posts

Well, our team finished last this season, but we still have a consolation game next weekend. I said I'd switch with the goalie to let him skate out for a change.

The game isn't important or anything but I'm looking for any advice or tips to remember. Anything is appreciated :]

cut off the angles and focus on squaring yourself on the shooters. Also I remember the first time I filled in at goalie taking that first shot and realizing that I would be OK was a big thing too so try to get that first shot early. Also if the other team knows you're new they might shoot low alot since you won't be as quick getting down as a regular goalie. Also to counter that my goalie told me to wait until you see the guy shoot before you react, my reactions suck so I wasn't so good at that but give it a try.

Oh and be ready for a lot of shots from the blue line, if the other team smell fresh meat they will shoot from everywhere.

The high shots are the easiest to stop. THe ones on the ice are the more difficult. Try to stand up and use your stick as much as you can. It's hard to push from side to side coming from a player to goalie so try to get the skating and positioning aspects down.

Wow, I did this once, didn't go over so well. Shots along the ice are soo deciving. I suggest doing alot of diving and flopping, because no offense but if gunna be hard to stop anything if you had no experiance like I did.

since its your first time your warm up will be important so you can get used to it, and the players should be shooting near you in warm up which will make you feel good because you *should* stop most of those lol

Don't be a lazy piece of crap like my goalie in practices or stuff like that because you probly won't get better. And try to improve your quickness or reaction time. Do some catching drills or maybe juggle like that guy in miracle, I'm no goalie expert.

talk to your team mates during the game... tell them to get out of the way, player in front of you, unmarked attacker...

the goalie on my team does a great job of telling us when there are opponents nearby, and he also watches the other goalie when our team is attacking. By half time, he tells us where are the weaker points of the other goalie (glove side, low shot...)

Try to play the butterfly style and have your trapper up. If skaters come close to shooting (close range) drop down and drop the trapper to your side as the shooter will not shoot high into your trapper but under the trapper. It's to lead the skater to shoot where you want them to shoot. Under the trapper and five hole.

Also vary the dropping down and just standing still to fool the shooters so they know you don't go down on every shot. It will mess with their mind.

Also get ready to stick out your skates to stop the low shots along the ground.

Poke checking is good when they come close enough.

heh...well, we ended up losing 5-3.

i let in 3 goals in the first, 1 in the second, and 1 in the third.

the first 2 were real weak, the rest weren't anything special either but i feel like i can blame the defense for em anyways ;]

thanks again guys...
