Spider Court Reviews

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

Looks like the league I am playing in is "spider court". I have only played on this a handful of times. I split about 50/50 last year with Painted concrete and Sport court. I'm hoping some of you floor guru's could help me with what I can expect from grip and wheel breakdown on this court. Like I said i've played a handful of times here and it seemed extremely similar to sport court, but maybe you guys have differen't opinions.

the outdoor rink i play at is spidercourt. I play there 4-5 times a week as long as weather permits, and i've been playing there for about 3 yrs, so i can give you a good review.

To start out, my experience has been that most people don't like the court because of the tendency of your wheels to slide out. It definitely takes a few skates to really get used to it, but i'm sure its not too far off of sport court. I found a shorter stride helps keep your wheels from sliding out when you're moving fast.

The puck whips on the surface, its forgiving as anything on sticks, and, i found it to be extremely forgiving on my wheels (i use indoor wheels). Hockey stops are a breeze, and you get a good slide rather than the hard, abrupt stop you get on say a wood surface.

Overall, I would say to give it a few skates to get used to it. Like i said, most players don't like it at first, but thats because its such a new surface compared to the painted concrete rinks all over. I'm sure it won't be too much of an adjustment for you coming off of sport court.

edit: i want to elaborate more on the wheel-wear factor for you, but its so hard to explain. My league is on a wood floor, and although its smooth as all hell, it murders soft wheels. They crack and chunk like crazy. I think its due to the high friction and resistance the surface gives you on a hard stop. On the other hand, i found that from the spidercourt, my wheels never crack, but instead they kind of just wear nice and evenly. You lose grippiness, but at least the wheels don't fall apart. most people think the holes in the tiles and the "spider" texture would kill wheels. I thought the same, but i've never experienced anything bad, and i've used dynastys, gripper-lites, and now z-rateds on the surface. hope this helps a lil.

If I remember correctly, its basically sport court, but instead of being all platic, its plastice tiles (square) with a spider web pattern

is it sort of perforated, I guess for lack of a better term?

if so I think I played on it when I was younger, though it reminded me more of a waffle than of a spider.

anyhow, the previous description fit my experience. pretty slippery, but this allows for easy hockey stops..............w/ lots of adjustment.

Yes, its tiled, perforated, and has a subtle texture to it that looks like hairy spider legs.

The perforations give you great waffle welts/bruises on you elbows and hips

Thats the surface on the outside the Long Beach Arena...no? When i played a tourney there we went from playing in a blow up boards around the parking lot to it. So it definately was a weird experience. Although i didnt play on it all that long, i really had liking for it. Sportcourt is basically the only court i like to play on

Its been a while. Maybe it was the NHL breakout? Playing on a rink with blowup boards was pretty damn cool, but the pucks obviously got stuck between alot. Its been quite some time since it was there. Back when i was first starting to get serious about hockey. Maybe 4-5 years ago?
