Anyone here made the change to 102 flex from 77-87?

Recommended Posts

I really like Bauer sticks and I've used the Nexus 8000 in 87 flex (cut about an inch) an NXG 77 flex uncut and really liked that but if I did take a slap shot I didn't have much on it and before both I had a APX2 87 flex that I loved but it was non grip and with that shaft being so rounded I needed grip.

Anyway I just got a deal on a brand new APX2 Pro Stock P92-L in grip, stick code BR03G which translates to APX2SE which apparently is the more durable version on an APX2. They didn't have 87 flex but I couldn't pass this up so I got a 102.

I'm 5'9ish and about 195lbs and flexed out my Nexus 8000 which was roughly a 90ish flex on slapshots so I was wondering if anyone else has made the transition to 102 from 87 and was curious how you felt about it. Pros? Cons? I'm curious to see how a stick like the APX2 will behave in Pro flex in terms of puck feel/handling and snap/wrist shots vs slap shots

I can't comment on going to 102 from 87, but I can tell you the APX2se's play significantly stiffer. I obtained a bunch in 87 flex and they felt more like 100 to me. The things are built like tanks though, they're awesome.

I've had both NXG and APX SE pro stocks, from my experience the thicker walls on the shaft are more noticeable on the APX than the NXGs. If anything it feels like you're bringing the shape of the APX closer to the NXG/Nexus shape. I know some people stay away from the APX because it feels too thin for adult hands, so possibly the APX SE helps with that issue.

As for moving down up/down in flex I've had all types of Bauer sticks the last few years both retail and pro stock and in my experience the APX seems to accentuate the different flex ratings more than the TO/NXG or Nexus.

See my personal opinion is that the off the rack the APX2 has that "this just feels too good to ignore" feeling when it's in your hands. It won me over in the shooting cage but I was always concerned because it seemed to be a very fragile stick. Typically I don't do grip but I owned an 87 flex retail p92 apx2 in non grip and the shaft was too rounded to not have grip so this time around I changed it up. I used the 102 in one game and for clappers the shot is definitely heavier but I'm not sure about the other shots I only took maybe 15 total between warm ups and the game.

One things for sure though, I do like the sure footed feeling of a 102 flex for the rest of the game. It just feels more solid instead of something that's bending and whipping in every aspect.

I haven't made that exact transition, but I went from 100s to 90s then took the jump to 75s. Especially when moving to the 75 I found I had to be careful not to overpower the stick on shooting. By this I mean not taking too much ice or driving the stick into the ice too much. It was a minor adjustment for me, took a few games. As well I had to get used to the whippier stick flexing during board battles. I don't think you'll see that as much going to an 87.

I'll chime in to say I switch from a 75 flex dolomite to a 100 flew widow and in terms of shooting I am liking the dolomite more but in terms of stick handling and passes I like the widow. Passing seems more precise and when I stick handle with the dolomite It feels like it's flexing where as the widow seems to translate a better puck feel. The reason I like the dolomite better for shooting is because it's easier to just let off a quick wrister but I find with the widow I have to focus more on mechanics which slows up release a bit but that may be more human error then mechanical
