Bent Skate Blades

Recommended Posts

I currently have a pair of Vapor XX's, and I am constantly bending the blade on my right skate. It seems like every couple of skates I have to straighten the blade. I have heard all kinds of explanations from various shops on why its happening. Does anyone else have these kinds of problems? I know there has been a lot of issues with blades breaking, but I havent seen any posts on them bending.

I think it might be because my feet are small, so I fit the largest size junior skates (5.5). Also I skate with out socks, so I have been told that the rivets rust out and the holder shifts causing the blade to bend. But I have a friend with CCM Vector 7's and he skates bare foot and doesnt have these same problems. I hang my gear and skates every night to let them dry out.

I am thinking about moving to the mission L7's because the holder and steel seem to be a bit "beefier" on them.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Also I am 5'7 and 165lbs, been skating two years. I skate between 2 to 3 times a week year round.

It may have something to do with yoru size but i think you keep bending it because your still on the same runner....everytime you bend and straighten it i would assume the steel becomes weaker and more prone to bending...the holder may also be mounted wrong but im no expert at this..

Without seeing the skates it's hard to say for sure. It's quite possible that the holder is not mounted correctly. That would cause the steel to keep bending out of shape.

sorry I should have given more info.

I purchased my skates a year and a half ago. Not long afterwards I bent the blades. The first shop I went to suggested getting the full blades, so I did. The kid working there, took off the holders to replace the blades. Everything was good for about a month or so, then I would notice that sometimes I couldnt get a very good edge when skating. I realized that one of the blades was shifting in the holder. The blade had been over tightened so the locking screw had widened the holder...so I took it back to them and they re-adjusted it correctly. A few months later my blades are bent again. So I took them to a different shop, which told me the holder was not on correctly so I had them straighten the blades and remount. That was the last work I had done on them. I am a little skeptical to buy new Tuuk's at around 70 bucks just to have the same problem...not to mention all the other money I have re-invested into these skates. I am leaning towards cutting my losses, and getting another pair.

I really want the L7's but I only know one place selling them and I fit a 6 which according to Mission is a junior, but the shop is selling them as a senior...

Sounds like at least one of them didn;t know what they were doing. I'm curious, what shop is selling the junior skates at a senior price? If you can't find anyone local who will sell the skates at the correct price, let me know. I don't stock them but I may be able to help you.

It was Dave's Sport shop in Fridley, it was the only place I could find them and I fit a 6, and asked the sales man if they were jr's figuring since I fit a jr in all the other brands it would be the same. He told me senior. So I went home and looked it up.

It seems Mission has a really bad reputation in Mpls, because most of the shops are carrying the Reebok instead of the Mission skates...

I am going to be calling a couple other places that I think might be carrying them.

If you know of any shops in my area let me know. Thanks.

It looks like Hockey Giant here in Blaine is going to be getting them in shortly, but their website shows a 6 as a sr also. I guess I will know for sure when they get them in and it has a jr blade holder on it.

Actually Hockey Monkey has 6 as the largest jr size, the mission website has them as the highest jr size. I think Hockey Giant website has some typo's. The L7's are not listed the same as the L5 or L4's.

Even the catalogues on this forum have this for the L7's:

SIZES SR: 6.5 – 13 + half sizes, (12.5 not available), D, EE widths

JR: 4 – 6 + half sizes, D, EE widt

I will know for sure because the jr's only have two pitch adjustments on them, while the sr's have 3.

Also I find it interesting that the Hockey Giant website has them the same as Bauer/CCM/RBK/Nike because the cut off for jr's is 5.5 for those brands. But Mission sizes there skates usually a half size larger.

I think the web administrator got lazy when adding the new skates to the website.

You can't compare Mission sizing to CCM/Bauer. Mission skates are sized to fit true to US shoe size because it uses American sizing, unlike CCM, Bauer with euro sizing. So..... a Mission size 6 is equivelant to a CCM size 4.5, a jr skate.

I disagree about the sizing, Mission is not true to shoe size. Most people I know are about half a size off in Bauer and about a full size off in CCM depending on their foot.

Mission uses US sizing, that is the point I was trying to make. CCM fit is 1.5 sizes smaller than shoe, Bauer 1 size and Mission the same. That said, no "formula" is exact when it comes to fitting, that is a whole beast in itself.
